How you can help

You don't have to be an environmental campaigner or a conservation biologist to change the environment for the better. Small differences in our daily lives can have a wide impact if every one of us makes a little bit of effort.

Here are some simple suggestions to help you change. Don't wait - get out there and start making the world a better place right now!

TURN OFF

  • Lights when leaving the room
  • Computer monitors
  • Television and stereos off of standby
  • Heating - wear more layers!
  • Taps when brushing teeth
  • Unplug your phone charger when you're not charging your phone

    FOOD and GARDEN

  • Grow your own vegetables and fruit
  • Plant trees
  • Compost all of your kitchen and garden waste
  • Reduce food miles - Use locally sourced food e.g. farmers markets
  • Use rainwater to water garden

    TRANSPORT and TOURISM

  • Walk, cycle, use public transport or carpool
  • Make holidays ethical - ecotourism, volunteering
  • Use low emission and hybrid cars
  • Take the stairs, not the lift
  • Request carbon offsetting for flights
  • Volunteer and support charities and NGOs in your spare time

    RECYCLE and RE-USE

  • Paper, bottles, cans, mobile phones, computers
  • Re-use plastic bags
  • Donate old clothes to charity shops
  • Use Terry/Cloth Nappies

    USE THESE PRODUCTS

  • Low energy light bulbs
  • Recycled paper and products
  • Wood products from sustainable wood sources
  • Water-saver cistern filter
  • Rechargeable batteries
  • Renewable energy
  • iodegradable soap, shampoo, laundry detergent, and deodorant

    SOME IMPORTANT EXTRAS

  • Take a shower instead of a bath
  • Boil kettle with only as much water as you need
  • Contact energy provider to request renewable electricity sources
  • Don't use MDF or fibreglass insulation
  • Use eco-friendly cleaning products
  • Avoid excessive packaging
  • Spread the word!
