Volunteer in Madagascar

Madagascar has been isolated for over 165 million years, creating a biodiversity resource of global significance, with over 80% of species found nowhere else on earth, including leaping sifaka lemurs, lesser mouse lemurs and even the elusive fat-tailed dwarf lemur. Reptiles include tortoises, snakes, iguanas and a vast array of chameleons, including both the smallest and largest in the world. The variety of life is reflected in the strong cultural heritage of the Malagasy people, contributing to the island's name as "Island of the Ancestors" with their belief in the power of the dead to protect and guide the living.

Why volunteer in Madagascar?

Madagascar is a truly unique country and a once-in-a-lifetime experience for any traveller. Madagascar boasts species and habitats unlike anywhere else on earth, making it a fascinating country in which to volunteer with widlife and ecosystems. The Malagasy culture is uniquely interesting and its people friendly and welcoming. However it is also one of the poorest countries on earth, so community volunteering is of immense value.

What type of volunteering can I undertake in Madagascar?

Frontier has been working with Madagascar's communities, species and habitats for over ten years, and has built up a wealth of sustainable initiatives that have consistently benefited Madagascar's communities and ecosystems.

Our projects are located on the picturesque island of Nosy Be, off the north coast of Madagascar. Volunteers can work on ongoing marine conservation, wildlife conservation or lemur conservation projects from our vibrant beach camp. Community volunteers can work in teaching, sports coaching or healthcase initiatives from our volunteer house in the local town.

Choosing to volunteer in Madagascar offers an eye-opening, rewarding and life-changing experience.

“I have never been travelling before but Frontier made it stress free and easy as they helped from the beginning and throughout the project.  I'd 100% recommend this project to anyone who'd like to visit paradise and at the same time have fun with amazing people and see some amazing sights that you'll never forget.” - Patrick Porter – Madagascar Wildlife Conservation Volunteer
