Fiji - Unforgettable

Although the locals tend to chill and do things on “Fiji time”, my time here has gone so quickly.  Getting the bus to my placement is an experience in itself – call it a good day if you manage to get across the station without being nearly run over or beeped at!

The health care here is very basic and the staff make the most of what they have.  While I’ve been here I have taken blood pressures, blood sugar, done dressings and been out for home visits with the nurses.  It’s fascinating to see the diversity of living conditions.  I have also spent time visiting a local hospital, which cares for those with mental health disorders.  The staff are trying hard to rid Fiji of the stigma attached to mental health disorders and it is interesting to see the programmes they run to re-integrate patients into society.

The weekends have been amazing – we have been out to islands, trekked through the rain forest and some of us have learned to surf on Natadola beach; the most beautiful beach in Fiji!

It’s worth bringing some extra cash to get out of Suva and see the country ... what we’ve found to be an unforgettable month.
