WHAT WILL I BE DOING?
This placement is ideally suited to medical students, and even qualified doctors and nurses, with a good command of both written and spoken English, and any related experience will of course be advantageous. There is the possibility of customising the work programme to suit your area of expertise and study, and also your individual preferences as well.
Your first week is designed to give you an opportunity to explore the history and culture of India through a dedicated orientation week. Taking in local sites of special interest, cooking lessons, basic language classes, and possibly your first taste of yoga and meditation, you will learn practices that are central to Indian philosophy and way of life. Following this wonderful opportunity to fully immerse yourself in your new surroundings, you will receive your briefings for the volunteer work to begin.
Following your orientation week you will receive basic job training and start in a number of different departments. This will introduce you to general healthcare practices and the work culture of India, and ensure you derive the greatest benefit from the subsequent weeks. You will then be stationed within a specific department and you will assist both the local doctors and nurses in the daily work programme. The most successful volunteers will display willingness, open-mindedness and flexibility, and will be keen to involve themselves at every possible opportunity.
