There are millions of street children and working children in India. Many have suffered neglect and abuse at the hands of family members or are addicted to sniffing glue or other narcotics or are sold into slavery.

The local police forcibly house the children into shelters, from where many subsequently run away. This might be because shelters are centres of abuse or because children have developed a mistrustful attitude towards caretakers. They don’t understand that they need to be cared for, or believe that they could possibly have a future to look forward to.

Also, the quality of education for children from underprivileged backgrounds is very poor in India. Even where basic education is provided, in many cases the creative, physical and key skills education is completely neglected. You’ll help these children to reach their true potential and bring joy to their lives by teaching, playing football, singing songs, and doing arts and crafts with them - a truly rewarding and enriching experience.

As part of your volunteer experience, you will work with neglected or outcast children at a school or shelter. Your activities could involve helping with study and education, making music and art together, or playing games and sports together, whatever you are interested in, use your initiative!

Schedules are not strictly structured and there is plenty of room for you to use your creativity and implement your own ideas. You will discover the enormity of the difficulties these marginalised children face each day and bring them some unfamiliar attention and some much deserved affection.

You will be greeted upon arrival at Goa Airport by a representative from Frontier-India and escorted by bus, taxi or even rickshaw, on the short journey to the centre where you will be based for the duration of your stay. Please aim to arrive on the Sunday.

You will find all of your accommodation to be basic, but of course clean and comfortable. The rooms will be single sex and shared, and participants are expected to be environmentally responsible and use precious resources with restraint, and to help by keeping the living areas clean and tidy. The doors and windows are not mosquito proofed, so don't forget your mosquito net!

All three meals during the day will generally be taken together and will be typical of the region. Breakfast will vary from rice to Indian breads, and lunch and dinner will include a range of Indian dishes, characterised by rice, vegetables and sauces. You should be prepared for some of the food to be spicy, it being India after all, but you will find that there are tastes to suit all palates.

Once you have finished your volunteer placement why not book a trip with the in-country staff, thus supporting the local economy and getting a chance to see some more of this wonderful country. Options may include (depending on availability) exploring the Portuguese-speaking state of Goa where you can sample some of India’s best dishes and buy beautiful cloths in the bustling Anjuna market before getting ready for a night out in one of the fantastic nightclubs. No trip to Goa is complete without a visit to one of its famous beaches. Alternatively you could visit the historic city of Mysore, capital of the kingdom bearing the same name, with its beautiful palaces, markets, museums and elephants. World famous silk, sandalwood and traditional handicraft can be admired and bought cheaply here. Kerala is another great option if you are interested in traditional life, or if you are more interested in natural India why not visit Karnataka where you can witness rich and abundant biodiversity as you explore the tropical forest by rafting down its central river. Whatever you chose is sure to be a magical experience.

Volunteers on the Frontier-India Teaching & Adventure Project can get a TEFL certificate at no additional cost! This will help you to teach anywhere in the world and is great for demonstrating your experience to foreign language education employers.

Your TEFL training will take place over a day at our London Office. We'll take you through everything from basic grammar and punctuation to lesson plan development and communication skills! This is also great opportunity to meet other volunteers and learn more about Frontier.

You might be worried that you don't have any teaching experience. Don't be! This course is designed for people who are teaching for the first time. We'll take you through the basics, making sure that you are comfortable with the material at every step of the way.

To receive your quote or to seek any advice for your flights, please contact our dedicated team of travel experts on 0800 082 9994 (or +44 800 082 9994 outside the UK) or email frontier@flightcentre.co.uk .

For fast, efficient and up-to-date visa advice please contact our recommended visa consultancy partner:

Depending on your destination country and your country of origin, you might require a visa. Please see the appropriate country consular website for details or contact our affiliate visa consultancy service. Please note that your visa will usually start on the date that you enter the destination country regardless of when it was issued. Please check with the relevant embassy or high commission. If you are purchasing your visa or paying entry/exit fees in-country you will probably need to pay in US Dollars. If you have any questions please consult the relevant embassy or high commission. Please check the visa information regularly, as changes often happen without warning.

You'll need to buy appropriate travel insurance covering your participation on the project. You won't be able to go without the right travel insurance so double check to avoid disappointment. Please make sure that you're covered for the whole duration of your trip – from the day you leave the UK to the day you return. It's also best to get your travel insurance at the same time as paying the deposit for your project. Depending on your policy, this will cover you for any unexpected cancellations.

Your insurance should include the following:

  • Medical cover, including medical emergencies and medical evacuations (up to USD$3,000,000 / GBP£2,000,000);
  • Personal liability (up to USD$1,500,000 / GBP£1,000,000);
  • Cancellation and curtailment of your trip (up to the value of your project contribution).

If you are going to be scuba diving you should get coverage for scuba diving up to 30m, including hyperbaric therapy treatment (unlimited). You should consider obtaining insurance to cover you for any additional activities which you plan to do during, before, or after your Frontier project. We recommend that you obtain cover for your baggage and personal effects.

Frontier Partner Projects and Frontier group projects are run in partnership with in-country NGOs, small community based organisations, local research institutes, academic organisations and conservation agencies. Project descriptions and information are supplied directly by our partners or field staff and are accurate at time of publishing.

We aim to keep information up to date and accurate, however, the nature of our projects and in particular the fact that they are constantly evolving and developing in response to changing needs means that project activities, travel schedules, tour itineraries and daily timetables can change overnight and without notice.
