Indonesia is the site for an absolutely vast store of biodiversity which makes up a significant proportion of the precious rainforest reserve left in the world. Within the forest a complex network of ecosystems support a huge number of species which exist in a delicate balance. However, it is also arguably subject to the highest levels of deforestation, partially due to the introduction of biofuels as an alternative to fossil fuels, which has in fact simply led to the continuation of further habitat destruction, threatening thousands of species and removing the protection that the forest provides for the planet.

Expedition projects such as these are vital as they support the introduction and growth of high quality, sustainable ecotourism – a type of tourism that aims to sustain conservation efforts whilst benefiting and aiding local communities, providing long term and effective strategies for preserving the natural environment. If any long term solutions are to be reached, organisations that are promoting ecotourism in vulnerable areas must be maintained.

This project is an incredible chance to enjoy a life changing experience in a stunning environment where you will learn valuable skills, whilst also supporting responsible and ethical tourism that has a very important role in protecting this undeniably invaluable natural resource.

Your journey will start with a night spent in a hotel in Bukit Lawang, enabling you to adjust to the humidity and to relax and prepare for the journey ahead. Following this, a short introductory trek is included in the expedition cost, involving travelling out to a feeding platform to spot partially rehabilitated Orangutans, giving you the chance to practise identifying these appealing primates in the dense undergrowth. Next your trek begins – six days and nights of travelling through the forest, constantly learning and practising expedition skills ranging from catching fish for your dinner, building your own fire for cooking and even finding and preparing jungle medicine! You will also be on the lookout for a multitude of species, particularly Orangutans, and enjoying the extraordinary levels of biodiversity that are found here – of the 10,000 plant species found in the West Indo Malayan region, it is estimated that 45% are found in this national park. Throughout your journey, you will be learning about ecotourism from your expert leaders, and will fully appreciate how important these sustainable measures are. Once the trek is over, you will have an adrenaline fuelled river "tube" journey (rafting) back to Bukit Lawang, where you will end on a high with an evening BBQ and party. This really is a truly unique expedition and will provide an absolutely unforgettable experience!

Airport pickup will be provided from Kuala Namu International airport. Once collected you will be escorted to your accommodation via bus and briefed on the days ahead.  Please aim to arrive before midday to ensure you have enough time to make the three hour journey to the project site by public transport.

During your first and last days you will be accommodated in a comfortable guesthouse/hotel. During the trek itself you will be sleeping under tarpaulins in your sleeping bag, drifting off to the sounds of the jungle and waking to a symphony of exotic bird calls.

Basic, filling meals of rice and vegetables for most days, you will have a great opportunity to learn how to cook in the jungle! When out of the rainforest you can try and sample other Indonesian delicacies cooked with coconut milk, served alongside noodle soups and tantalising chicken.
