WHAT WILL I BE DOING?
The Kenya Healthcare Internship is based on the beautiful Kenyan coastline. Volunteers could be assisting in either a hospital or local clinic, depending upon availability at the time of your placement, in Malindi or Kaloleni, north of Mombasa. This project is best suited to pre-med students, medical students and medical practitioners, as the work will involve carrying out medical duties within the hospital or clinic, and will give you invaluable preparation for a career in medicine. The placement will allow you to observe medical practices and give you the opportunity to take part in the day-to-day running of a hospital or clinic, using a rotational programme which enables volunteers to help in a variety of departments. Those with determination, enthusiasm, aptitude and the right inclination may be able to assist the doctors and nurses in their duties and gain hands on experience of administering healthcare to the Kenyan people. You will be expected to work between 8am and 2pm Monday to Friday, with free time in the afternoons and weekends.
Your work may consist of basic healthcare activities, such as taking histories, diagnosis, prescription and diagnosis of ailments and giving assistance to the existing medical staff. However, please note that your level of involvement will depend upon your previous experience and qualifications, as well as the needs of the hospital at the time. It is therefore important to remain flexible.
There is also the opportunity to spend free time in the hospital as well, but this is purely optional and we encourage volunteers also to spend some time with their host families and embrace the local culture. The hospital staff are all incredibly friendly and welcome questions from volunteers on all aspects of procedures and hospital life.
