Tibet Ethical Trails

Tibet Ethical Trails

Visit palaces that once sheltered kings, serene lakes where monks perform profound ceremonies around the water's edge, monasteries that are sanctuaries of the Tibetan religion, and much more!

Prices from $2,395

Tibet- an secretive Shangri La locked away in the icy mountain ramparts of the Himalayas, and a place that holds a deep fascination for anyone who wishes to visit one of the last few cultures that has resisted the onslaught of globalisation and the encroachment of the West. Previously only accessible by treacherous passages through rocky escarpments, Tibet has only recently become more accessible to tourists and travellers.

Despite attempts by the Chinese occupation to submerge Tibetan culture, the people of Tibet have clung stubbornly to their ancient ways and traditions and these are represented throughout the temples and sprawling cities, remote village outposts and isolated nomadic communities of this enigmatic land. Visit festivals that assault the senses with firelit processions, billowing clouds of pungent incense, and dancers and priests dressed up in kaleidoscopic masks decorated with leering grins, designed to drive out evil spirits. Watch as a vast prayer wheel spins, emitting a thousand prayers up to the heavens, as a mass of Buddhist followers chant incessantly, observing age old customs that have endured to the modern day.

Later visit the entirely contrasting and tumultuous streets of urban Lhasa, where the streets are filled with quaint cocktail bars serving happy hour cocktails and restaurants offering irresistible curries and delectable stews. You will be based in Beijing and will travel into Tibet by overland train, where you will visit palaces that once sheltered kings, serene lakes where monks perfom profound and intriguing ceremonies around the water's edge, monasteries that are sanctuaries for the preservation of the Tibetan religion, and much more. Join our ethical journey and see all that this unique region has to offer, whilst you gain a true appreciation of the need to help and protect the people and culture of this most magical of destinations.

You will be travelling into and around Tibet from Beijing. Your journey will cover a range of sites ranging from well known highlights to obscure and fascinating but lesser known areas. Lhasa,  traditionally home to Dalai Lama before his exile, is one of the key sites on the tour. Behind the towering walls of the Potala Palace in Lhasa lies a world of extraordinary colour, rich tapestry and precious artefacts, all relecting the spiritual appreciation of beauty that sits at the centre of Buddhism.

Other Lhasa highlights include Barkhor Square, a bustling marketplace which at dawn and dusk teems with pilgrims circumnavigating the Jokhang temple. The route will also take in smaller villages and towns and monastries, where time seems to have stood still- teahouses where locals gather to share the latest gossip, shrines, shared quarters where whole communities rely on one water pump, and much more. In more remote areas you will admire glorious birds of prey circling the towering peaks, and vast valley scapes where tribesmen herd their flocks of cattle following age old traditions and routes. All this and so much more awaits you on this exciting tour.

You will be met at Beijing airport by a friendly Frontier representative, and dropped  back here at the end of your journey.  All your project related travel is included, and this is usually by overland train into Tibet, crossing much of China and giving you the chance to enjoy spectacular landscapes and sensational views.

Generally you will be staying in simple and comfortable hostels en route. There may also be opportunities to stay in intimate hotels, homestay and teahouses. Usually you will be sharing rooms with other members of your party although there will be the possibility of upgrading to single or double rooms at a small additional cost.

Meals are not included on the journey, so you will be free to purchase street delicacies or eat in the many and varied restaurants encountered on your travels. Alternatively you will be able to cook food to your own tastes. Tibetan food is largely based around barley, meat and dairy products- vegetables are scarce particularly at higher altitudes. Tsampa is the staple diet- barley flour which is treated and flavoured in various ways. Yoghurt is also popular, and meat such as beef and mutton is dried in strips and flavoured with salt, ginger and spices. Specialities such as liver sausages are worth a try, as the meat is almost always very good quality. Tibetans love tea just like the British, and drink it in a similar manner with milk and sugar, or black. Barley beer is another Tibetan speciality that you might like to try. Vegetarians are welcomed and can be catered for.

You'll need to buy appropriate travel insurance covering your participation on the project. You won't be able to go without the right travel insurance so double check to avoid disappointment. Please make sure that you're covered for the whole duration of your trip – from the day you leave the UK to the day you return. It's also best to get your travel insurance at the same time as paying the deposit for your project. Depending on your policy, this will cover you for any unexpected cancellations.

Your insurance should include the following:

  • Medical cover, including medical emergencies and medical evacuations (up to USD$3,000,000 / GBP£2,000,000);
  • Personal liability (up to USD$1,500,000 / GBP£1,000,000);
  • Cancellation and curtailment of your trip (up to the value of your project contribution).

If you are going to be scuba diving you should get coverage for scuba diving up to 30m, including hyperbaric therapy treatment (unlimited). You should consider obtaining insurance to cover you for any additional activities which you plan to do during, before, or after your Frontier project. We recommend that you obtain cover for your baggage and personal effects.

Frontier Partner Projects and Frontier group projects are run in partnership with in-country NGOs, small community based organisations, local research institutes, academic organisations and conservation agencies. Project descriptions and information are supplied directly by our partners or field staff and are accurate at time of publishing.

We aim to keep information up to date and accurate, however, the nature of our projects and in particular the fact that they are constantly evolving and developing in response to changing needs means that project activities, travel schedules, tour itineraries and daily timetables can change overnight and without notice.
