WHAT DOES THE PROJECT DO?
The main focus of the basketball placement is creating structured training and playing environments for keen players in and around the townships of Port Elizabeth, predominately aged between 8 and 16 years of age. Because basketball has not seen the same focus and attention as other sports in South Africa, most of your time will be spent supporting informal street leagues and township teams. Although this may require an extra level of commitment and initiative on your part, plus a willingness to laugh off unexpected problems, you will have a direct impact on the sport. You will also have a very positive effect on the lives of the basketball players you are coaching, making this an exceptionally rewarding project.
As a basketball coaching volunteer you can help provide opportunities for enthusiastic young players to practise sports in an organised and fun environment as well as teaching them personal life skills which will equip them for the rest of their lives!
WHAT WILL I BE DOING?
Under the leadership of local staff you will usually work five days a week coaching children of various ages, normally between nine and sixteen, on both in school and after school placements at various schools in the townships around Port Elizabeth.
You will normally work with children who are from disadvantaged backgrounds and will become so much more than just a coach to them. Since the goal is not to find Africa’s next international player (although you never know!) you do not need to be a qualified or vastly experienced coach. So long as you have a basic understanding of the game and the ability and enthusiasm to organise group games and training, you will be very well suited to this basketball placement!
Please note - If you choose to become a basketball coach you will also be required to pick a second choice sport depending upon local interest at the time. Basketball is growing in popularity in South Africa but currently we are not able to guarantee a full work programme focused solely on basketball.
