WHAT WILL I BE DOING?

Introduction week

Your introductory week is the first step towards a successful stay in Thailand and is designed specifically to ensure that you get the most possible out of the trip as a whole. Your culture, language and cooking lessons will help you to settle and feel more at home, and the temple and museum visits will give you a taste of the history of Thailand and the influences on the development of its national identity.

Culture week

The second week of your placement will give you the opportunity to explore Thai culture in more depth, including learning about Buddhism and meditation with local monks in a quiet and spiritual environment. Visiting monasteries and markets you will very quickly find yourself in touch with the spirit of Thailand, something that will stay with you forever.

Trekking & Adventure week

Taking your lessons into the jungle with you, you will embark upon a trek in the Phutoei National Park, a site rarely visited by tourists. The surroundings are breathtakingly beautiful and the guides are friendly and helpful, but the trek is not for the fainthearted. Now could be a good time to start training! It will all be worth it in the end, as you take lunch beside a roaring waterfall or catch a glimpse of a view you never thought existed.

Beach break

Your rest and recuperation comes in the form of your final week on Ko Samet, spending your days on the white sand beach, in the turquoise tropical sea, or lazing in the shade of the palm trees. The only thing required of you during this final week is that you relax and enjoy yourself! You'll find that you leave Thailand walking a little slower than when you arrived, and all your worries will be far away!

Options

For those who would prefer the experience of volunteering in a school or an orphanage rather than the adventure trek, this option is a possibility upon request. The Experience can also be extended in-country to include options such as Thai Boxing, Elephant Conservation, and the Horse and Equine, and Hill Tribe volunteer placements.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ARRIVE?

You'll fly into Bangkok on the Sunday before your project begins and you will be met at the airport by a representative from Frontier-Thailand. You will then transfer to your project site for the first phase of your Thailand Experience, a journey of around 140 km north by bus or taxi. In Singburi you will be met by local coordinators who will transfer you to the eco-house.

WHERE WILL I BE STAYING?

During the first two weeks of your placement you will be staying in one of three eco-houses in Singburi. The rooms are twin shared and all the houses have Western style toilets, while one even has an Asian style toilet! You will have access to cool water showers, which you'll find refreshing in the heat of Thailand! There are communal areas for eating, relaxing and meeting your new friends and there is a local shop within walking distance of most of the houses should you feel the need for any additional treats!

Following the introductory and culture weeks, you will begin your trekking. During the trek you will be living in tents, depending on the weather and local circumstances, and it may be possible to stay in local schools during the rainy season. You will need to be prepared for basis living conditions, with Thai bathrooms and Asian toilets only. This is your chance to get back to nature!

Your final week will be spent in a beach resort on Ko Samet, and the backpacker style accommodation will be a comfortable but basic twin shared bedroom close to the water's edge.

WHAT WILL I BE EATING?

All food is included during your placement, and you will find it to be typically Thai fare. Thai is one of the world's most exciting cuisines, and if you're willing to experiment, you'll be richly rewarded. Contrary to popular belief, not all Thai food is fiery hot and there are plenty of tasty dishes suited to the Western palate. This hybrid cuisine has been influenced by soups and noodle dishes from China, curries from India and satays from Indonesia. Most dishes incorporate four elements, sweet, sour, salty and hot flavours, and many of the dishes are rice or noodle based.

WHAT'S NOT INCLUDED

Flights

Flights are not included in our trip costs. However, we have partnered with an experienced and professional team of travel experts to help our volunteers find the best flight deals for their trips with us. This travel specialist operates in the tailor-made, long haul multi-stop travel market, arranging complex airfares and transfers for independent travellers. They provide expertise, security and a vast product range along with a Travel Butler service which is a single point of contact and support whilst you are overseas.

We recommend that you obtain a quote using the following contact details rather than book online, as our partner will offer you the most competitive fares. To receive your quote or to seek any advice for your flights, please contact our dedicated team of travel experts on 0800 082 9994 (or +44 800 082 9994 outside the UK) or email frontier@flightcentre.co.uk .

Visas

For fast, efficient and up-to-date visa advice please contact our recommended visa consultancy partner:

Depending on your destination country and your country of origin, you might require a visa. Please see the appropriate country consular website for details or contact our affiliate visa consultancy service. Please note that your visa will usually start on the date that you enter the destination country regardless of when it was issued. Please check with the relevant embassy or high commission. If you are purchasing your visa or paying entry/exit fees in-country you will probably need to pay in US Dollars. If you have any questions please consult the relevant embassy or high commission. Please check the visa information regularly, as changes often happen without warning.

Insurance

You'll need to buy appropriate travel insurance covering your participation on the project. You won't be able to go without the right travel insurance so double check to avoid disappointment. Please make sure that you're covered for the whole duration of your trip – from the day you leave the UK to the day you return. It's also best to get your travel insurance at the same time as paying the deposit for your project. Depending on your policy, this will cover you for any unexpected cancellations.

Your insurance should include the following:

  • Medical cover, including medical emergencies and medical evacuations (up to USD$3,000,000 / GBP£2,000,000);
  • Personal liability (up to USD$1,500,000 / GBP£1,000,000);
  • Cancellation and curtailment of your trip (up to the value of your project contribution).

If you are going to be scuba diving you should get coverage for scuba diving up to 30m, including hyperbaric therapy treatment (unlimited). You should consider obtaining insurance to cover you for any additional activities which you plan to do during, before, or after your Frontier project. We recommend that you obtain cover for your baggage and personal effects.
