Prices from $2,645

Home to some of the most magnificent and spectacular wildlife, ancient and mysterious tribal communities, vast expanses of savannah, tropical blue oceans and imposing mountain landscapes, Tanzania will surpass all expectations. Africa’s big 5 roam the plains and gorges where remnants of early human life lie undiscovered and Mount Kilimanjaro challenges all who stand in her shadow. The waters of the Indian Ocean lap Tanzania’s coastline and are home to a staggeringly diverse range of species, from curious looking invertebrates to gigantic whale sharks and manta rays gliding silently over the coral reefs.

QUALIFICATIONS

A variety of qualifications are available on many of our projects. For example, BTEC certificates and diplomas on our Group conservation projects and TEFL certificates and BTECs on most of our teaching projects. For more information on these qualifications, please see the qualifications section of our website or ask your volunteer advisor.

WHAT DOES THE PROJECT DO?

Your journey will begin in the town of Moshi which lies on the lower southern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. The town is small but has all the facilities you may need to help make any last minute preparations for your trek.

Kilimanjaro is the highest free standing mountain in the world and is part of the Great Rift Valley, a volcanic system that dominates the east African landscape. Kilimanjaro National Park is made up of a series of 3 volcanoes, Uhuru Peak is the highest point on Kibo volcano and this is your target. You will trek with your group over 5 days reaching the peak on day 5 where you will enjoy a sunrise at 5895m above sea level!

WHAT WILL I BE DOING?

Day 1: Moshi

Arrive and settle into your accommodation, free time is available for any last minute supplies for your trek.  You will also be given a pre-trek briefing at our volunteer base.

Day 2: Moshi to Mandara Hut – 2743m

An early morning start today to begin your trek through the lush rainforest landscape that characterises the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Day 3: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut – 3760m

Today your journey will take you through a dramatic change in landscape, from lush green rainforest to dramatically baron volcanic moorland.

Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut – 4730m

This is the last day before you try for the summit. You will trek over what is known as ‘the saddle’, a 5km wide flat area between two of Kilimanjaro’s peaks.

Day 5: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak – 5895m and descent to Horombo Hut

Your day will begin long before sunrise as you attempt to summit. Once at the highest point in Africa you will have time for plenty of photos and to watch the sunrise over Kenya and Tanzania below before a rapid descent to Horombo Hut.

Day 6: Horombo Hut to Moshi

The last day of your trek will see you safely back in Moshi to relax and recover from your journey and celebrate your amazing achievement.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ARRIVE?

You will be picked up from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) by a friendly project member and transported to your accommodation in Moshi. Please be aware that you will be responsible for covering the cost of the airport pickup directly, which, however, will be minimal. Once you have had time to rest the local staff will provide you with a briefing about the trek and local orientation. Your in-country coordinator will be more than happy to help you settle in and acclimatise and you'll feel at home in no time in this friendly, vibrant country.

WHERE WILL I BE STAYING?

When you first arrive you will stay in a volunteer house in the safari town of Moshi, where you will get the first glimpse of Mount Kilimanjaro. The volunteer facilities are comfortable and clean and you will be sharing a same sex room with other volunteers and will have running water, showers and western style toilets. Internet access will also be available for a small fee.

Whilst you are on your trek accommodation will be either tented or in huts along the trail to the roof of Africa.

After your trek you will return to Moshi where you will be free to make your own arrangements. Most volunteers either plan their onward travel for this day or simply take the time to rest and recuperate in the comfort of a local guest house. Please be aware that you will be responsible for your own arrangements and the cost of those arrangements once you have been returned to Moshi.

WHAT WILL I BE EATING?

You will be provided with breakfast and dinner during your time in Moshi at the start and end of your trek. Whilst on the trek up Kilimanjaro you will be provided with 3 meals a day. They will be basic but well balanced to ensure you have all the energy you need to trek.

Food in Tanzania is generally simple, consisting of vegetables, beans or meat with rice or ugali, the staple food for most of sub-Saharan Africa made from maize flour.

ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

In your spare time you are sure to want to explore the natural and cultural wonders that are found in this remarkable land. As the project ends in Moshi, why not take a safari to see Africa’s big 5? There are many national parks to visit with some stunning landscapes. Having checked off Africa’s highest peak why not tick off Africa’s largest lake by visiting Lake Victoria in the west of the country? If you fancy heading south, Dar es Salaam is a popular centre on the coast offering visitors a picturesque harbour, bustling markets, historic buildings and don’t forget the deserted white sand beaches of Zanzibar or Mafia Island.
