QUALIFICATIONS

A variety of qualifications are available on many of our projects. For example, BTEC certificates and diplomas on our Group conservation projects and TEFL certificates and BTECs on most of our teaching projects. You may also be able to gain a CoPE to support your university application. For more information on these qualifications, please see the qualifications section of our website or ask your volunteer advisor.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING?

This project is best suited to medical students and medical practitioners as the work will involve carrying out medical duties at the placement. Your internship will give you invaluable preparation for a career in medicine. The placement will allow you to observe medical practices and give you the opportunity to take part in the day to day running of a local clinic or healthcare NGO. Those with determination, enthusiasm, aptitude and the right inclination may be able to assist the doctors and nurses in their duties and gain hands on experience of administering healthcare to the South African people.

Your placement will be arranged at either a local health clinic or local healthcare NGO, depending upon availability. You will be providing medical care to and carrying out outreach work for the benefit of under privileged communities in and around Port Elizabeth.

Your work may consist of basic healthcare activities such as observing procedures, shadowing medical staff, taking histories, administering prescriptions and diagnosis of ailments and giving assistance to the existing medical staff. However, please note that your level of involvement will depend very much on your own previous experience and qualifications as well as the needs of the clinic/NGO at the time of your visit. It is therefore important to remain flexible. Those volunteers with little experience could be given the opportunity to get involved with various community outreach programmes such as medical camps, health education, community visits and other relevant activities or shadowing the in house nurse at a local orphanage.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ARRIVE?

You will fly into Port Elizabeth airport, which is a short, one hour, flight from Cape Town international airport and can cost as little as $68-$85 if booked locally. Upon arrival you will be given a warm welcome by one of the project staff and transported to your accommodation in a cosy guesthouse lodge. Once you have had time to rest the local staff will introduce you to your project and the local area. Your in country coordinator will be more than happy to help you settle in and acclimatise and you'll feel at home in no time in this friendly, vibrant country.

WHERE WILL I BE STAYING?

Throughout your placement you will be staying in a guesthouse situated just 1 km from the beach and close to central Port Elizabeth as well as other major amenities and attractions. Set in a tranquil laid back area and surrounded by lush greenery, the lodge is the ideal location to kick back and relax after a hard day at work. All the rooms at the lodge have shared bathrooms and are serviced daily by our friendly staff. Sliding doors open onto the private patio overlooking the pool whilst each room is equipped with TV, tea /coffee making facilities and ceiling fans.

WHAT WILL I BE EATING?

You will enjoy three meals a day during the week, which will be a delicious combination of African and Asian food cooked by the skilled local catering staff. You may also enjoy authentic South African braais in the evening whilst discussing the day's achievements with friends against the backdrop of the night sounds of the countless birds and animals nearby. On weekends you will have the freedom to explore and sample the delights of Port Elizabeth and its many bars, cafes and restaurants where you will be responsible for your own arrangements along with your fellow volunteers.

ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

In addition to the work and excursions outlined above, there’s a load more to do on your free weekends or after your trip. About an hour's drive southwest of Port Elizabeth is the surf village of J-Bay, one of the hottest surf spots on the planet and definitely not to be missed. If culture is more your thing, then perhaps you might like to visit Grahamstown, Africa's festival capital, where the national Arts Festival takes place with over 50,000 visitors flocking to the city for a feast of arts, crafts and sheer entertainment and more than 500 shows on offer from opera, cabaret, drama and jazz to stand-up comics and folk music. There are numerous hiking trails which you could join along the Garden Route or perhaps you might like to visit Table Mountain, Cape Town or experience a thrilling safari to the famous Kruger National Park.

Flights

Flights are not included in our trip costs. However, we have partnered with an experienced and professional team of travel experts to help our volunteers find the best flight deals for their trips with us. This travel specialist operates in the tailor-made, long haul multi-stop travel market, arranging complex airfares and transfers for independent travellers. They provide expertise, security and a vast product range along with a Travel Butler service which is a single point of contact and support whilst you are overseas.

We recommend that you obtain a quote using the following contact details rather than book online, as our partner will offer you the most competitive fares. To receive your quote or to seek any advice for your flights, please contact our dedicated team of travel experts on 0800 082 9994 (or +44 800 082 9994 outside the UK) or email frontier@flightcentre.co.uk .

Visas

For fast, efficient and up-to-date visa advice please contact our recommended visa consultancy partner:

Depending on your destination country and your country of origin, you might require a visa. Please see the appropriate country consular website for details or contact our affiliate visa consultancy service. Please note that your visa will usually start on the date that you enter the destination country regardless of when it was issued. Please check with the relevant embassy or high commission. If you are purchasing your visa or paying entry/exit fees in-country you will probably need to pay in US Dollars. If you have any questions please consult the relevant embassy or high commission. Please check the visa information regularly, as changes often happen without warning.

Insurance

You'll need to buy appropriate travel insurance covering your participation on the project. You won't be able to go without the right travel insurance so double check to avoid disappointment. Please make sure that you're covered for the whole duration of your trip – from the day you leave the UK to the day you return. It's also best to get your travel insurance at the same time as paying the deposit for your project. Depending on your policy, this will cover you for any unexpected cancellations.

Your insurance should include the following:

  • Medical cover, including medical emergencies and medical evacuations (up to USD$3,000,000 / GBP£2,000,000);
  • Personal liability (up to USD$1,500,000 / GBP£1,000,000);
  • Cancellation and curtailment of your trip (up to the value of your project contribution).

If you are going to be scuba diving you should get coverage for scuba diving up to 30m, including hyperbaric therapy treatment (unlimited). You should consider obtaining insurance to cover you for any additional activities which you plan to do during, before, or after your Frontier project. We recommend that you obtain cover for your baggage and personal effects.
