QUALIFICATIONS

A variety of qualifications are available on many of our projects. For example, BTEC certificates and diplomas on our Group conservation projects and TEFL certificates and BTECs on most of our teaching projects. You may also be able to gain a CoPE to support your university application. For more information on these qualifications, please see the qualifications section of our website or ask your volunteer advisor.

WHAT DOES THE PROJECT DO?

Explore stunning coral reefs in the crystal clear waters of Cambodia, learning to dive in this incredible setting. Professional PADI dive training is available for diving enthusiasts of all skill levels, so whether you’re looking to kick-start a career in scuba diving, or earn a more basic dive qualification; this project will open up a world of underwater adventure and excitement. Ranging from the Open Water to the Rescue Diver Qualification, through an assortment of theoretical and practical lessons, you’ll earn an accredited and globally recognised PADI certification that will allow you to scuba dive at beautiful locations around the world.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING?

Our professional instructors will give you a thorough understanding of everything scuba related! You’ll participate in a variety of theory lessons and practical diving sessions to help you achieve your qualification. During the mornings and day times you’ll be learning all there is to know about scuba diving, leaving the evenings free to relax with your fellow divers on the beautiful moonlit beaches of Koh Rong.

Please be aware that you should not fly for a minimum of 24 hours following a diving session, so take this into consideration when booking your flights home. Additionally, we recommend checking with your doctor prior to departure to this project, as some medical conditions can prevent you from diving safely, namely; pregnancy, flu, heart and/or lung condition(s), diabetes, asthma, and epilepsy, whilst it is also advised you have a good level of fitness and confidence in open water (being able to swim for roughly 200 metres, float or tread water for about 10 minutes, and feel comfortable in water for long periods is a sufficient standard), so make sure you get the green light from your doctor so you can dive safely and enjoyably!

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ARRIVE?

You'll be met upon arrival at Kep by a friendly local staff member and transported to your project site. Your journey could take anything up to six hours or more, and include a taxi, a bus and a boat, and will be an exciting and exhilarating first glimpse of your new home through the eyes of a local.

If you would prefer, an airport collection can be provided upon arrival at Phnom Penh for an additional fee, payable when you arrive. Please be aware that you are responsible for your own costs until your arrival at the project site, for example if your arrival time dictates that you are required to spend a night at a local guesthouse before transferring down to the coast.

WHERE WILL I BE STAYING?

You will be staying in a shared volunteer house based at the project location, with small but comfortable rooms. The house has basic facilities including a bucket shower, and limited electricity subject to power cuts. There is no washing machine so be prepared to wash your clothes by hand. You will soon feel very much at home and part of the community.

WHAT WILL I BE EATING?

You will receive three meals a day, consisting of basic local Khmer cuisine, and vegetarian diets can be catered for. This gives you the chance to try out dishes such as delicately spiced curries, fresh local market produce, and delicious meat, fish and vegetables. Bottled water will also be provided. Enjoy your meals alongside your fellow volunteers in the comfort of your peaceful surroundings.

Depending on your destination country and your country of origin, you might require a visa. Please see the appropriate country consular website for details or contact our affiliate visa consultancy service. Please note that your visa will usually start on the date that you enter the destination country regardless of when it was issued. Please check with the relevant embassy or high commission. If you are purchasing your visa or paying entry/exit fees in-country you will probably need to pay in US Dollars. If you have any questions please consult the relevant embassy or high commission. Please check the visa information regularly, as changes often happen without warning.

Insurance

You'll need to buy appropriate travel insurance covering your participation on the project. You won't be able to go without the right travel insurance so double check to avoid disappointment. Please make sure that you're covered for the whole duration of your trip – from the day you leave the UK to the day you return. It's also best to get your travel insurance at the same time as paying the deposit for your project. Depending on your policy, this will cover you for any unexpected cancellations.

Your insurance should include the following:

  • Medical cover, including medical emergencies and medical evacuations (up to USD$3,000,000 / GBP£2,000,000);
  • Personal liability (up to USD$1,500,000 / GBP£1,000,000);
  • Cancellation and curtailment of your trip (up to the value of your project contribution).

If you are going to be scuba diving you should get coverage for scuba diving up to 30m, including hyperbaric therapy treatment (unlimited). You should consider obtaining insurance to cover you for any additional activities which you plan to do during, before, or after your Frontier project. We recommend that you obtain cover for your baggage and personal effects.
