Comprising of more than 7,000 individual islands, the Philippines has been shaped continuously over the centuries to become what it is today: an exciting fusion of Spanish, Asian and American influences. Davao City is the largest and fourth most populous city in the Philippines and has recently undergone dramatic development. Poverty is widespread and has been exacerbated by this rapid expansion. The number of Filipinos reduced to poverty has increased, and the growing number of migrants to the area in search of work aggravates the situation further. These communities are in dire need of development projects to assist in alleviating this poverty. You will become part of a team dedicated to making a valuable contribution to this effort.

Your day to day activities will vary throughout your stay on this enchanting island. You can expect to be helping out in areas such as improving community infrastructure, providing crucial teaching support, whilst additionally renovating community buildings and developing regular village clean-up and recycling projects. There will undoubtedly be lots of additional community activities for you to lend a helping hand to!

You will be working in the heart of the community, getting involved in important tasks. The people you are helping will be very hard working and appreciative of your contribution to their community, and will be incredibly responsive to your presence on the project. Although the work may occasionally be arduous, it will be incredibly rewarding and fulfilling, creating memories that will stay with you for the rest of your life!

You will be met upon arrival at Francisco Bangoy International Airport in Davao City by a friendly local Frontier representative and taken to your accommodation where you will have the opportunity to recover from your long journey.

Your local coordinator will be more than happy to help you settle in and acclimatise so that you'll feel at home in no time in this friendly and laid back community.

Throughout the project you will be staying in shared, mixed accommodation with your fellow volunteers. The volunteer house will be basic, but of course clean and comfortable with all the facilities that you will require during your stay. Take some time to relax in the communal living space and really get to know the other volunteers that you’ll be working with.

For the duration of your project you will receive 3 filling meals per day Monday to Friday, and 2 meals per day on the weekend. Philippine cuisine has developed from an exciting variety of influences including Malay, Spanish, Chinese and American, thanks to its trade and seafaring history. Other Asian and Latin dishes have also been adapted to incorporate local ingredients, providing you with a vast range of dishes to sample and enjoy. Popular dishes include a whole roasted pig, traditional Philippine sausage, omelettes, braised chicken and pork and a variety of seafood to name just a few. If you are feeling particularly adventurous, why not try some of the weird and wonderful exotic fruits Davao City has to offer! Dont leave the city without trying the durian fruit, known for its strong pungent odour and nutty custard like flavour.

During your free time be sure to explore the hustle and bustle of Davao City as you wander through its lively streets. Visit the Philippine Eagle Center and see one of the world's rarest, most elusive eagle species and the largest in terms of wing span! Go the extra mile and take on some of the adventure trips the city has to offer. Go wakeboarding, river tubing, wild water rafting and trek the countries' tallest mountain, Mt. Apo!

Once you have completed your project why not travel around Davao and visit the beaches around the island to get some much deserved relaxation and recuperation? The pure white beaches are perfect to pass away your days and the turquoise ocean is teeming with beautiful and fascinating marine wildlife. Your Volunteer Coordinator in Davao will be more than happy to help you organise diving excursions with local tour companies so you can make the most of this exciting opportunity.

To receive your quote or to seek any advice for your flights, please contact our dedicated team of travel experts on 0800 082 9994 (or +44 800 082 9994 outside the UK) or email frontier@flightcentre.co.uk .

For fast, efficient and up-to-date visa advice please contact our recommended visa consultancy partner:

Depending on your destination country and your country of origin, you might require a visa. Please see the appropriate country consular website for details or contact our affiliate visa consultancy service. Please note that your visa will usually start on the date that you enter the destination country regardless of when it was issued. Please check with the relevant embassy or high commission. If you are purchasing your visa or paying entry/exit fees in-country you will probably need to pay in US Dollars. If you have any questions please consult the relevant embassy or high commission. Please check the visa information regularly, as changes often happen without warning.

You'll need to buy appropriate travel insurance covering your participation on the project. You won't be able to go without the right travel insurance so double check to avoid disappointment. Please make sure that you're covered for the whole duration of your trip – from the day you leave the UK to the day you return. It's also best to get your travel insurance at the same time as paying the deposit for your project. Depending on your policy, this will cover you for any unexpected cancellations.

Your insurance should include the following:

  • Medical cover, including medical emergencies and medical evacuations (up to USD$3,000,000 / GBP£2,000,000);
  • Personal liability (up to USD$1,500,000 / GBP£1,000,000);
  • Cancellation and curtailment of your trip (up to the value of your project contribution).

If you are going to be scuba diving you should get coverage for scuba diving up to 30m, including hyperbaric therapy treatment (unlimited). You should consider obtaining insurance to cover you for any additional activities which you plan to do during, before, or after your Frontier project. We recommend that you obtain cover for your baggage and personal effects.

Frontier Partner Projects and Frontier group projects are run in partnership with in-country NGOs, small community based organisations, local research institutes, academic organisations and conservation agencies. Project descriptions and information are supplied directly by our partners or field staff and are accurate at time of publishing.

We aim to keep information up to date and accurate, however, the nature of our projects and in particular the fact that they are constantly evolving and developing in response to changing needs means that project activities, travel schedules, tour itineraries and daily timetables can change overnight and without notice.
