QUALIFICATIONS

A variety of qualifications are available on many of our projects. For example, BTEC certificates and diplomas on our Group conservation projects and TEFL certificates and BTECs on most of our teaching projects. You may also be able to gain a CoPE to support your university application. For more information on these qualifications, please see the qualifications section of our website or ask your volunteer advisor.

WHAT DOES THE PROJECT DO?

The Frontier-Bolivia Extreme Mountain Biking adventure begins in the metropolis of La Paz, where you are transfer by mini-bus to the vast expanse of the altiplano high above the city. From here, the only way is down as you are guided by qualified professional riders on top of the range serviced mountain bikes on the ride of your life.

After a detailed safety briefing it’s down to you to give thanks to Pacha Mama and head off on the ride of your life.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING?

Throughout the ride you will be surrounded by jaw dropping views, waterfalls and canyons along the famous North Yungas Road. The road is now officially closed to motorised vehicles, making it the perfect all downhill trail for enthusiastic thrill seekers.

Your mountain biking adventure may last between 4 to 5 hours and begins at La Cumbre, a wind-swept plain on the Andean altiplano 4,700 metres above sea level. At La Cumbre, you may have the opportunity to take in fantastic views of snowy covered peaks. From La Cumbre, you will take a rapid descend down a twisting asphalted road among the mountain peaks, grazing llamas and alpacas, and tiny villages. We stop for refreshments, photos, and rests along the way - all the better to give us time to take in the surrounding towering cliff faces, dramatic drops and ever greener vegetation, while preparing ourselves for the next breath-taking section.

After a snack we descend further, and after a brief undulating section of road we enter the jungle itself and the most challenging part of the ride. This infamous narrow dirt road is cut precariously into the side of the mountain and descends 2,000m. With 1,000m+ sheer drops off to our left and hulking rock overhangs and cascading waterfalls to our right, we ride through mist, low cloud and dust. With your positive attitude and our expert instruction, coaching and supervision you can safely enjoy some of South America’s most dramatic and beautiful scenery as you hurtle down the road.

As we near the end of the ride it gets progressively hotter and dustier. By the time you arrive at the bottom you will be tired, hot, dirty and exhilarated. Just below the village of Yolosa we ride down to our final rest stop at a local wildlife sanctuary where we enjoy a late pasta and salad buffet lunch, take in the magnificent scenery, spend time relaxing by the pool, enjoying a cold drink and getting to know the rescued animals.

Please note: Participants have the option of overnighting in the jungle town of Coroico rather than returning to La Paz the day of the ride, in which case we shall deliver you and your backpack to the town square of Coroico. Many people take this option and then take a bus the next day from Coroico to Rurrenabaque and the Bolivian Amazon Jungle.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ARRIVE?

You will fly into La Paz international airport before making your own way to the project meeting point in central La Paz at 7:30am where you will be met by a friendly Frontier representative.

We recommend that you arrive into La Paz the night before the project start date. Your Frontier Volunteer Coordinator can help you make any accommodation and transfer arrangements however these would be at your own cost.

WHERE WILL I BE STAYING?

Accommodation is not provided as part of this programme.
Participants will be returned to La Paz at the end of the day (approx. 8-10pm) unless otherwise requested. Alternatively you have the opportunity to remain in the jungle town of Coroico (approx. 5pm).

WHAT WILL I BE EATING?

Basic snacks and refreshments are provided along the route, however you are welcome to bring along additional supplies which can be transported in the supporting minibus.

A pasta and salad buffet lunch is also provided at the end of the ride at our final destination near Coroico.
