WHAT DOES THE PROJECT DO?

The Frontier-Bolivia Experience is the perfect way to experience some of the travel highlights of this amazing country in an action packed 6 day adventure. Perfect for thrill-seeking adventurers who are up for a challenge this unique expedition is your ticket to explore the beautiful mountain ranges of Bolivia and the mystical Amazon jungle. You will ride down the scenic mountain tracks of Bolivia and cruise through an untouched Amazon jungle river system. Keen explorers will also have the opportunity to trek through the rainforest with a local experienced guide and discover the sights and sounds of life in the jungle!

WHAT WILL I BE DOING?

Day 1

On the first day, you will take a long drive north to the town of Sorata. Take this opportunity to see the picturesque peaks of the altiplano in the east and the giant expanse of Lake Titicaca in the west.

Sorata is a gateway for hikers and mountaineers. Mingle with the locals and fellow travellers over lunch and while you’re at it, why not tantalise your taste buds and sample some of the local cuisine!

After lunch, you will continue your way to a family run eco-lodge where you will be staying for the night. After an informal briefing session for the next day’s expedition, the night is yours!

Day 2

You will start the day with an early breakfast and a quick debriefing session before heading to the project starting point. You may be up for a long and winding drive but views are however nothing short of spectacular!

Upon reaching the summit of one of the towering mountain vistas, your extreme adventure begins! Take in the moment and marvel at the beauty and magnitude of the valley ahead of you. This is where you are heading!

You may be riding a drop of over 4,000 metres in 110 kilometres on a 4x4 “two-track road”. It is a huge downhill track - one of the biggest in the world! Please do however expect some slight uphill and flat surfaces as well as some rough rocky sections.

After a few hours of mountain biking, you may find yourself on top of a ridge with a magnificent view of the Amazon basin and a quaint little village where you may break for lunch.

After lunch, your team may decide to press on to give you ample time to arrive in your designated accommodations before sundown. You will make your way towards a bridge where you will continue your journey on 4 wheel drives up the difficult incline.

Upon arriving to your accommodations, you may take the time to relax or have a little wander about while dinner is being prepared.

Day 3

After an early breakfast, you will hop onto the 4x4s and take a short drive along river’s edge until you reach the jungle where you will begin the day’s off-road adventure.  It may be hot and humid and very challenging, however, any discomfort you may experience will be swept away by the sight of the lush greenery interspersed by impressive waterfalls and creeks along the way.

The day’s biking excursion will end in Mapiri, a gold mining centre and trading hub for the region. Your wonderful Frontier guide will immediately direct you to your motorised longboat which will ferry you off to your evening’s accommodation.

Day 4

After an early breakfast walk down to Rio Mapiri and hop onto our longboat to continue your trip down river.

The longboat trip down to the town of Guanay will not be a short one but will be a wonderful introduction to jungle life! Once in Guanay, you will have a relaxing lunch at a local restaurant overlooking the river. This stop is also your opportunity to load up on some essential supplies before leaving civilisation behind so use your time wisely.

After lunch, you will continue down river until you reach our first river camp. At camp you will have the chance to rest and take it easy while we prepare dinner or you can take a hike to explore the local region.

After dinner, enjoy relaxing campfire chatter under the pristine evening sky to the sounds of the rainforest.

Day 5

Set off on a short hike into the jungle after breakfast and take a refreshing swim in the clear pool of a secret waterfall! Your schedule allows you ample time to enjoy this little detour but be sure to be back in camp with enough time to assemble your kit and load back up in the longboat to continue your expedition downstream.

Along the way you will pass several active goldmines before entering the protected area of Madidi National Park. We will take another quick hike and see the surrounding flora and fauna before heading further down to the beach where you will set camp.

Day 6

After breakfast, you will resume the longboat journey down the canyon. You may have the opportunity to have short hikes along the way and make the best out of your last day in the jungle.

Your trip will end in the steamy jungle town of Rurrenabaque. Our guides will help you arrange your accommodation in Rurrenabaque for the night should you wish to stay and give you useful advice for the continuation of your Bolivian adventure!

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ARRIVE?

You will be required to make your own way to the project meeting point in La Paz for 7:30am on the Monday, where you will meet our guides and the rest of the expedition team. You will therefore be required to arrive into La Paz the day before your project start date. We will provide you with further detailed information prior to your departure to enable you to plan your journey.

WHERE WILL I BE STAYING?

Throughout your trip you will be staying in a variety of different accommodation types depending on your location. These can range from shared hostel accommodations to camping facilities in the Amazon jungle!

Be aware that the accommodations can be very basic, sometimes with no running water which will be the case when in the rainforest!

WHAT WILL I BE EATING?

You will be provided with food and bottled drinking water throughout the trip which will be a mixture of packed lunches, local restaurants and locally cooked camp food. The food cooked by your friendly Frontier guides may be standard vegetarian fare such as fettuccini pasta with delicious vegetarian pasta sauce. However, be assured that the food will be delicious, filling and will surely hit the spot! When eating out, Bolivian food typically consists of meat, potato and rice.
