1. In Brief

There are few cities more exciting than Hong Kong. The city is known for its high population density, expansive skyline and financial prowess. It is a place with multiple personalities as a result of being both Cantonese Chinese and having benefited from relatively recent British administration. Hong Kong is a unique destination that has absorbed a diverse range of cultural influences and proudly proclaims itself to be Asia's World City.

Hong Kong is an important node in the global economic system, and ranks as the third most important international financial centre, after New York and London.  Hong Kong has the greatest concentrations of corporate headquarters in the Asia-Pacific region, with the Hong Kong Stock Exchange being the largest centre of IPOs in the world. All of this contributes to making Hong Kong an exciting destination for any students looking for a challenging and hands-on internship experience.

An internship in Hong Kong will be a rewarding experience. It will not only provide you with skills that will be transferrable to future positions, but it will also provide you with an insight into the working world in a diverse and engaging city environment.

2. The project

WHAT DOES THE PROJECT DO?

The Frontier Hong Kong Marketing and Advertising Internship is designed to give enthusiastic students and recent graduates an opportunity to gain some practical experience within this competitive industry. We facilitate your placement at a local marketing agency in central Hong Kong where you will shadow experienced members of staff and be given assignments according to the focus of the agency at the time of your visit.

Our internship programme provides students and young professionals with guaranteed tailor-made marketing internships. Before you start the internship placement process, you must apply and get accepted; during the placement process, you will be working with our programme advisor who will organise interviews with our large network of marketing agencies in Asia.

You will learn about the economic and social situation in one of the world's fastest growing economies, as you bring your enthusiasm and experience to this exciting internship. China is a dynamic and complex country, where politics and social patterns are constantly changing. By travelling as an ethical, responsible and considerate visitor, you will gain a fascinating insight into modern day China while developing your own experience.

By fully immersing yourself in the community you are subscribing to an ethos that is beneficial to the culture that you are spending time in. At the same time you are making yourself into a well-rounded individual and a more attractive prospect for potential employers and universities.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING?

As a Marketing & Advertising Intern you will be introduced to the process of generating strategy that underlies sales techniques, business communication, and business development. You will get the chance to first-hand see the integrated process through which companies build strong customer relationships and create value for their customers and for themselves. A placement in this sector is not only challenging, but also an excellent opportunity to learn about strategy, branding techniques, evolving media, and account coordinating - making it a worthwhile and rewarding experience. You will get the opportunity to learn more about advertising in general and perhaps get the chance to work on developing your own “unique selling proposition” to communicate your own qualities for your future employment.

3. What to expect

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ARRIVE?

You will be met at the Airport by a friendly local staff member from where you will be escorted to your project accommodation where you will have a chance to rest following your journey before being introduced to your internship programme.

WHERE WILL I BE STAYING?

Throughout your placement you will be staying in a studio apartment. The apartments are conveniently located across the heart of Hong Kong including areas such as Causeway Bay, Sheung Wan and Wan Chai. You will have access to all necessities including a private bathroom, TV, Mini-Fridge, air conditioning & internet access. All apartments are within walking distance from an MTR station making it convenient for interns to travel to and from their internship placement and home.

WHAT WILL I BE EATING?

A great aspect of this amazing project is that it is self-catering. This is a fun element of travelling away from home as it gives you that added freedom and is a good opportunity to bond with fellow travellers and volunteers while exploring local restaurants and market stalls! Hong Kong is Asia’s top culinary capital. The city brings together a variety of culinary styles, including Cantonese, Shanghainese, Vietnamese, Japanese and European. Whatever takes your fancy, you are sure to find it in Hong Kong. Ensure you try the wonton noodles and freshly steamed dim sum.

The city boasts a multitude of high-rise buildings and beautiful skyscrapers, but is also home to beautiful hidden islands and national parks. Visas

For fast, efficient and up-to-date visa advice please contact our recommended visa consultancy partner:

Depending on your destination country and your country of origin, you might require a visa. Please see the appropriate country consular website for details or contact our affiliate visa consultancy service. Please note that your visa will usually start on the date that you enter the destination country regardless of when it was issued. Please check with the relevant embassy or high commission. If you are purchasing your visa or paying entry/exit fees in-country you will probably need to pay in US Dollars. If you have any questions please consult the relevant embassy or high commission. Please check the visa information regularly, as changes often happen without warning.

Insurance

You'll need to buy appropriate travel insurance covering your participation on the project. You won't be able to go without the right travel insurance so double check to avoid disappointment. Please make sure that you're covered for the whole duration of your trip – from the day you leave the UK to the day you return. It's also best to get your travel insurance at the same time as paying the deposit for your project. Depending on your policy, this will cover you for any unexpected cancellations.

Your insurance should include the following:

  • Medical cover, including medical emergencies and medical evacuations (up to USD$3,000,000 / GBP£2,000,000);
  • Personal liability (up to USD$1,500,000 / GBP£1,000,000);
  • Cancellation and curtailment of your trip (up to the value of your project contribution).

If you are going to be scuba diving you should get coverage for scuba diving up to 30m, including hyperbaric therapy treatment (unlimited). You should consider obtaining insurance to cover you for any additional activities which you plan to do during, before, or after your Frontier project. We recommend that you obtain cover for your baggage and personal effects.
