Philippines Culture Week

Philippines Culture Week

Experience life in the Philippines as you learn about local customs, cook traditional foods and explore this beautiful area.

Prices from $695

Palawan is considered one of the Philippines top destinations with emerald green jungled mountains, clear blue waters and stunning white sandy beaches. The long, narrow island is dotted with fishing villages and surrounded by numerous smaller islands. On land prehistoric caves and waterfalls lay waiting to be explored whilst the clear waters play host to an array of marine life. If you can tempt yourself away from relaxing on the soft sands there is so much to discover on this island.

Experience Philippines culture first-hand by exploring a little known region, immersing yourself in the cuisine and visiting cultural and naturally beautiful sights. The Philippines Culture Week is tailored to introduce you to (just some) of the things that the island of Palawan has to offer. During the week you will learn some language basics, take a cooking class, taste plenty of authentic food, visit local sights of significance and trying to get an understand of the 'real' Philippines!

What does the project do?

This program offers a great opportunity for you to learn and understand more about Philippines culture and to become more familiar with your surroundings in and around Palawan. It is an enriching and important experience to get to know the local culture and customes before embarking on a bigger adventure.  The week acts as an introduction to Palawan and the Filipino culture, but is also a great platform for meeting locals and new friends as well.

What will I be doing?

You will experience, Philippine culture, Philippine language and have a taste of some authentic Philippine food through some cooking classes. During this week you will visit all the famous sites around our centre that shouldn’t be missed. You will also have time to engage with local people, taste the food and learn about Philippine customs and culture first hand with locals.

What happens when I arrive?

You will fly into Puerto Princesa International airport on the Sunday where you will be met by a friendly in-country representative and transfer to the project site.

Where will I be staying?

You will be staying in shared accommodation in the volunteer guesthouse. There are shared bathrooms with cool showers and western-style toilets. There is WIFI on site and the rooms are fan-cooled with locks on the doors and linen provided. There are also various public transport options nearby and other optional activities to take part in.

What will I be eating?

Throughout your stay you will be provided with three meals a day. The meals will mainly consist of local Philippine cuisine so expect to be eating lots of vegetables, rice, egg and meat. Did we mention rice? Philippine cuisine has developed from an exciting variety of influences including Malay, Spanish, Chinese and American, thanks to its trade and seafaring history. Other Asian and Latin dishes have also been adapted to incorporate local ingredients, providing you with a vast range of dishes to sample and enjoy. Popular dishes include a whole roasted pig, traditional Philippine sausage, omelettes, braised chicken and pork and a variety of seafood to name just a few.

Visas

For fast, efficient and up-to-date visa advice please contact our recommended visa consultancy partner:

Depending on your destination country and your country of origin, you might require a visa. Please see the appropriate country consular website for details or contact our affiliate visa consultancy service. Please note that your visa will usually start on the date that you enter the destination country regardless of when it was issued. Please check with the relevant embassy or high commission. If you are purchasing your visa or paying entry/exit fees in-country you will probably need to pay in US Dollars. If you have any questions please consult the relevant embassy or high commission. Please check the visa information regularly, as changes often happen without warning.

Insurance

You'll need to buy appropriate travel insurance covering your participation on the project. You won't be able to go without the right travel insurance so double check to avoid disappointment. Please make sure that you're covered for the whole duration of your trip – from the day you leave the UK to the day you return. It's also best to get your travel insurance at the same time as paying the deposit for your project. Depending on your policy, this will cover you for any unexpected cancellations.

Your insurance should include the following:

  • Medical cover, including medical emergencies and medical evacuations (up to USD$3,000,000 / GBP£2,000,000);
  • Personal liability (up to USD$1,500,000 / GBP£1,000,000);
  • Cancellation and curtailment of your trip (up to the value of your project contribution).

If you are going to be scuba diving you should get coverage for scuba diving up to 30m, including hyperbaric therapy treatment (unlimited). You should consider obtaining insurance to cover you for any additional activities which you plan to do during, before, or after your Frontier project. We recommend that you obtain cover for your baggage and personal effects.
