This once in a lifetime cultural immersion and adventure tour in this charismatic spiritual country is not to be missed! This program will show you all you need to know about Chinese culture from the incredible and scenic mountains of Hongyan village to trekking around villages to Tai Chi and Chinese language lessons as well encounters with minorities, this program has it all.

Throughout the trip you will be travelling as part of a group that will allow you to make lifelong friendships and share unforgettable experiences with each other.

First Leg – Getting to know China

This Week in Chengdu is the important step towards a great stay in a new country! It is designed so that you can avoid culture shock and be eased into the Chinese customs. It is a fun filled week that is dedicated to getting to know China and some of its cultural aspects first hand. You will also get time to meet the local people, taste the local cuisine and get familiar with the Chinese custom.

Second Leg- Immersing into culture

This week will begin with a visit to the ancient city of Huanglongxi. After two days exploring these wonders, it's on to Fengyan. This is also a fun-filled week that is dedicated to getting to know China and some of its culture. You will have the time to meet the local people, taste the local cuisine and become familiar with Chinese customs. There are many opportunities to immerse yourself in the culture with visits to local villages, temples, local fairs and markets, and some amazing natural scenery sites.

Third Leg- Adventurous side of China

If you want to experience the more adventurous side of China, Longsheng Rice Terraces is one place you cannot miss! Trek in the amazing terraced rice fields and stay in hill-tribe villages. Enjoy a few days of this peaceful and extraordinary scenery. The journey up there is mildly challenging, but it is definitely worthwhile. Longsheng is a world famous place whose scenery varies with the seasons and harvests.

If you are arriving on Sunday between 8am to 12pm you will be collected upon arrival at Chengdu airport by a local staff member. Once you have had time to rest the local staff will introduce you to your project and the local area. Your in-country coordinator will be more than happy to help you settle in and acclimatise and you'll feel at home in no time in this friendly, vibrant country.

Accommodation is shared with other participants, usually only 2-4 people per room. The volunteer facilities will be simple, but comfortable and clean with shared bathroom facilities. A member of our staff will be accompanying you on your journey and will always be on call in case of emergency 24/7. Tours and transfers are by local bus, public transportation, highway bus and train.

Most day you will be provided with three meals, but during some days when there is free time you would be responsible for organising your own food. This is a great opportunity to discover local dishes such as dumplings, rice dishes, noodles, tofu and many more with your new friends. There are many specialities to try, and while some food can be spicy, there is usually something for every palate to be found!

Whilst the project schedule means that you will get the chance to do most activities as part of the programme, you may like to venture out in your spare time and explore the shops, visit famous monuments, or try out your new language skills at local markets - you are sure to want to discover more of the breathtaking natural environment or explore China’s local food and customs by visiting the traditional style restaurants tucked away in the winding back streets of the country.

For the adrenaline seekers there is a wealth of opportunities available through local tour operators such as bungee jumping, paragliding, canoeing, motor biking and rock climbing. If there are any specific adventure activities that you would like to incorporate into your trip, these are very likely to be available - ask your local project staff for prices and more information.

For fast, efficient and up-to-date visa advice please contact our recommended visa consultancy partner:

Depending on your destination country and your country of origin, you might require a visa. Please see the appropriate country consular website for details or contact our affiliate visa consultancy service. Please note that your visa will usually start on the date that you enter the destination country regardless of when it was issued. Please check with the relevant embassy or high commission. If you are purchasing your visa or paying entry/exit fees in-country you will probably need to pay in US Dollars. If you have any questions please consult the relevant embassy or high commission. Please check the visa information regularly, as changes often happen without warning.

You'll need to buy appropriate travel insurance covering your participation on the project. You won't be able to go without the right travel insurance so double check to avoid disappointment. Please make sure that you're covered for the whole duration of your trip – from the day you leave the UK to the day you return. It's also best to get your travel insurance at the same time as paying the deposit for your project. Depending on your policy, this will cover you for any unexpected cancellations.

Your insurance should include the following:

  • Medical cover, including medical emergencies and medical evacuations (up to USD$3,000,000 / GBP£2,000,000);
  • Personal liability (up to USD$1,500,000 / GBP£1,000,000);
  • Cancellation and curtailment of your trip (up to the value of your project contribution).

If you are going to be scuba diving you should get coverage for scuba diving up to 30m, including hyperbaric therapy treatment (unlimited). You should consider obtaining insurance to cover you for any additional activities which you plan to do during, before, or after your Frontier project. We recommend that you obtain cover for your baggage and personal effects.

Frontier Partner Projects and Frontier group projects are run in partnership with in-country NGOs, small community based organisations, local research institutes, academic organisations and conservation agencies. Project descriptions and information are supplied directly by our partners or field staff and are accurate at time of publishing.

We aim to keep information up to date and accurate, however, the nature of our projects and in particular the fact that they are constantly evolving and developing in response to changing needs means that project activities, travel schedules, tour itineraries and daily timetables can change overnight and without notice.
