Uganda lies landlocked on the Central African Plateau in East Africa and offers an incredible contrast of landscapes: semi deserts, savannah, lakes, the Nile, rainforests and mountain ranges. Tourism is a huge industry in Uganda, with travellers flocking to enjoy the breathtaking scenery and wildlife including the Big Five and the famous mountain gorillas. To quote Winston Churchill “For magnificence, for variety of form and colour, for profusion of brilliant life - bird, insect, reptile, beast - for vast scale -- Uganda is truly the pearl of Africa.”

As in many countries around the world, women in Uganda face a number of challenges: discrimination, unequal rights, poverty, low social status, low literacy rates, limited access to education and greater risk of HIV/AIDS infection. Traditional and cultural codes often result in girls being taken out of school early to help with income generating activities or agricultural labour and are more likely to be married at a young age.

Although women contribute to the socio economic development of Uganda, they still remain an economically disadvantaged group and in particular those from rural communities. Fewer jobs are available to women and their lack of economic power in rural communities is an obstacle to any long term improvement in their status.

This project looks to tackle this inequality and improve the quality of life for women in marginalised rural communities by providing economic stability.

WHAT DOES THE PROJECT DO?

The project aims to transform the livelihoods of Ugandan women through education, economic empowerment and entrepreneurship.

The project helps women aged between 18 and 35 to become economically self sufficient, providing them with the space and support to develop their business ideas, learn new vocational skills and join a community of supportive women.

Stistics show that once women are able to earn a living independently they marry later, bear fewer children and have greater autonomy in their households and communities. The result is social inclusion and a sustained increase in income which can be spent on food, medicine and schooling for their families.

In countries like Uganda, where economic development has stalled and millions live in poverty, investing in livelihood development for women is not simply an issue of women’s empowerment, it is also an investment in poverty alleviation and economic development for the future.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING?

Volunteers are encouraged to share their existing knowledge and skills with the women on the project. Volunteers can lead workshops in business skills, IT, administration, financial literacy, people management and customer care. You can offer counselling, information on reproductive health or help with the harvest of cash crops.

You might like to develop business plans and small grant proposals and help to design and successfully market handmade products. Whatever your background you can be sure that the guidance, knowledge and enthusiasm you bring to this project will benefit the women for years to come.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ARRIVE?

A member of staff from our local partner organisation in Uganda will meet you on arrival at Entebbe International Airport and take you to the volunteer guest house.

WHERE WILL I BE STAYING?

Accommodation is in same sex twin rooms in a local volunteer guest house. Each house has shared bathrooms with a western toilet, full kitchen facilities, a lounge area and Wi-Fi. ATMs, cafes, restaurants and supermarkets are a short walk away.

WHAT WILL I BE EATING?

You will be provided with three meals a day, prepared for you by a local staff member.

A typical breakfast consists of tea, coffee, bread, preserves and scrambled egg.

Lunch and dinner are filling and nutritious with plenty of delicious local vegetables, fruit, rice, pasta, cassava and matooke (boiled green bananas). Chicken and beef is served several times a week to supplement the menu.
