Guatemala Learn Spanish

Guatemala Learn Spanish

Whether a complete novice or looking for an immersive language experience, improve your Spanish language skills and fluency on this fantastic course while exploring the beautiful Guatemalan landscape

Prices from $695

Today’s Guatemala is a cultural and historical blend of inheritance between the captivating and enigmatic ancient Mayan civilisation, and its transformation during Spanish colonisation in the 16th Century. The Mayan legacy is still visible in the Guatemalan landscape, with magnificent towering pyramids, once opulent palaces and astrological observatories used to explore the Mayans inquisitive nature. As such, Guatemala is a real treasure chest of tradition and heritage ready to be explored and uncovered.

You'll study at a top language academy located in the historic city of La Antigua, a fusion of colonial influence and historical ruins nestled between three impressive volcanoes. The beauty of this area is internationally recognised, with the city designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. While there, you'll be immersed in a rigorous programme taught by language professionals with years of experience. To liven up your study, you'll have lots of opportunity to engage in adventure activities and cultural excursions. Visit some of the hundreds of magnificent churches that adorn Antigua, climb to the rim of an active volcano or lie by the lake under a bright Guatemalan sun.

If you speak Spanish you have the ability to communicate with over 500 million people in the world! Whether you want to improve your career prospects, make travel easier, or want access to the countless masterpieces that have been written in Spanish, then Frontier's Spanish language immersion programme is perfect for you.

You will study in class for 4 hours each day at the pretty language school located in the city centre, only a short walk from the picturesque Parque Central. You will receive private tuition from your own teacher, who will design lessons depending on your level and needs. This will provide you with strong emphasis on discussion and conversation practice while also receiving more specific, personalised tuition on an individual basis where you can progress at your own pace.

Classes are available for all levels of experience. When you arrive you will take a short test to determine your current level of Spanish. This will help your teacher to plan and guide your future classes in the most appropriate way for your needs.

The school has a lot of space to study, with areas both inside and outside for you to use. This means that you can still enjoy the lovely weather even when studying! There is also an on-site kitchen which you can use to prepare your lunchtime meals and WiFi so you can stay connected to home even when you’re on the other side of the world.

During the week the school also organises cultural activities in the afternoon. These do not follow a set itinerary but are planned on a short term basis depending on the requests of the Spanish students at the time. These activities may include cooking classes, city tours and museum visits. You will be responsible for paying your own transport and entrance fees when required.

You will be met by a friendly Frontier representative on arrival at La Aurora International Airport in Guatemala City who will escort you to your new home for the duration of your stay. Please arrive no later than 7pm on the start date of your project.

Throughout your course, you will stay with a welcoming local host family that has been carefully chosen by the language school. This is an excellent way for you to practice your improving Spanish and learn about the Guatemalan culture from people who are keen to share their stories with you and help you explore.

Your host will provide you with three meals a day during the week based around the local Guatemalan diet. At the weekend you will only receive breakfast on Saturday, with no meals being provided on Sunday. This is the perfect opportunity for you to try out the local delicacies. If you ask nicely your host family might even teach you how to cook your favourite dishes! At the weekend you may decide to check out local restaurants – with a variety of cuisines you’re sure to find something to satisfy your cravings at a range of prices.

For fast, efficient and up-to-date visa advice please contact our recommended visa consultancy partner:

Depending on your destination country and your country of origin, you might require a visa. Please see the appropriate country consular website for details or contact our affiliate visa consultancy service. Please note that your visa will usually start on the date that you enter the destination country regardless of when it was issued. Please check with the relevant embassy or high commission. If you are purchasing your visa or paying entry/exit fees in-country you will probably need to pay in US Dollars. If you have any questions please consult the relevant embassy or high commission. Please check the visa information regularly, as changes often happen without warning.

You'll need to buy appropriate travel insurance covering your participation on the project. You won't be able to go without the right travel insurance so double check to avoid disappointment. Please make sure that you're covered for the whole duration of your trip – from the day you leave the UK to the day you return. It's also best to get your travel insurance at the same time as paying the deposit for your project. Depending on your policy, this will cover you for any unexpected cancellations.

Your insurance should include the following:

  • Medical cover, including medical emergencies and medical evacuations (up to USD$3,000,000 / GBP£2,000,000);
  • Personal liability (up to USD$1,500,000 / GBP£1,000,000);
  • Cancellation and curtailment of your trip (up to the value of your project contribution).

If you are going to be scuba diving you should get coverage for scuba diving up to 30m, including hyperbaric therapy treatment (unlimited). You should consider obtaining insurance to cover you for any additional activities which you plan to do during, before, or after your Frontier project. We recommend that you obtain cover for your baggage and personal effects.

Frontier Partner Projects and Frontier group projects are run in partnership with in-country NGOs, small community based organisations, local research institutes, academic organisations and conservation agencies. Project descriptions and information are supplied directly by our partners or field staff and are accurate at time of publishing.

We aim to keep information up to date and accurate, however, the nature of our projects and in particular the fact that they are constantly evolving and developing in response to changing needs means that project activities, travel schedules, tour itineraries and daily timetables can change overnight and without notice.
