Sri Lanka Elephant Experience

Sri Lanka Elephant Experience

Work closely with elephants at a breeding centre that is home to the greatest herd of captive elephants in the world.

Prices from $1,545

Discover Sri Lanka, a glittering jewel of an island nestled in the aquamarine waters of the Indian Ocean.  Fringing the coasts are an array of gently arcing golden-sand beaches and vibrant colourful communities, making Sri Lanka is a country of exquisite cultures, landscapes and cuisines with a fascinating history that reflects this.

Intertwined with legend and fable, elephants were an emblem of the wealth and sanctity of the Sri Lankan kings. Many of the stunning ancient monuments of the Kandyan Kings were built with the aid of elephants, and these still stand as testament to the magnificence of these incredible mammals.

QUALIFICATIONS

A variety of qualifications are available on many of our projects. For example, BTEC certificates and diplomas on our Group conservation projects and TEFL certificates and BTECs on most of our teaching projects. You may also be able to gain a CoPE to support your university application. For more information on these qualifications, please see the qualifications section of our website or ask your volunteer advisor.

WHAT DOES THE PROJECT DO?

The orphanage was primarily designed to afford care and protection to the many baby elephants found in the jungle without their mothers, either due to natural causes or through hunting practices.  The elephant orphanage is situated halfway between the capital Colombo and the ancient royal residence of Kandy in the hills of central Sri Lanka. The 24 acre estate is a designated breeding centre and has the greatest herd of elephants in captivity in the world.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING?

Introduction week

Your first week is designed to give you an opportunity to explore the history and culture of Sri Lanka, and of course Kandy, with visits to local sites of special interest such as nearby markets, the chance to sample the local cuisine, and familiarise yourself with Sri Lankan customs and meet the local people, as well as hopefully learning some key phrases to help you get by.  Once fully immersed in your new surroundings, your briefings for the volunteer work will begin along with language classes and cooking lessons throughout the week.

Work Schedule

Throughout your placement you will work 5 days a week from around 8am to 5pm.  You will be involved in all aspects of the running of the centre including such duties as feeding the animals, cleaning out enclosures, taking part in behavioural enrichment initiatives as well as ongoing repair and maintenance work.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ARRIVE?

This project is unavailable during August 2016 due to the Perahara Season and Festival!

Upon arrival at Colombo Airport you will be greeted by a representative of Frontier-Sri Lanka and taken to your accommodation, where you will be based for the duration of your stay.  Once acclimatised and settled into the Sri Lankan way of life, you will then begin your introduction week followed by your volunteer work.

Please aim to arrive on the Sunday before your project begins and depart on the Saturday after your project concludes. If you decide to travel outside of these dates then you will be responsible for any associated costs.

WHERE WILL I BE STAYING?

Your accommodation will be in a local family homestay, the perfect way for you to learn about the Sri Lankan culture, improve your language skills and experience the Sri Lankan way of life.
You will live with a carefully selected host with experience of working with volunteers. Your accommodation will be clean, secure and comfortable, and you will be sharing a room with fellow volunteers and will have access to basic facilities.

WHAT WILL I BE EATING?

Three meals a day are included in the programme and will be typical of Sri Lanka's cuisine, mainly consisting of boiled or steamed rice served with curry.  Curries in Sri Lanka are typically made with meat, fish, vegetable and even fruit, and are made using coconut milk.  A typical meal consists of a ‘main curry’, as well as several other curries made with vegetable and lentils and served with side dishes such as pickles and chutneys.

They provide expertise, security and a vast product range along with a Travel Butler service which is a single point of contact and support whilst you are overseas.

We recommend that you obtain a quote using the following contact details rather than book online, as our partner will offer you the most competitive fares. To receive your quote or to seek any advice for your flights, please contact our dedicated team of travel experts on 0800 082 9994 (or +44 800 082 9994 outside the UK) or email frontier@flightcentre.co.uk .

Visas

For fast, efficient and up-to-date visa advice please contact our recommended visa consultancy partner:

Depending on your destination country and your country of origin, you might require a visa. Please see the appropriate country consular website for details or contact our affiliate visa consultancy service. Please note that your visa will usually start on the date that you enter the destination country regardless of when it was issued. Please check with the relevant embassy or high commission. If you are purchasing your visa or paying entry/exit fees in-country you will probably need to pay in US Dollars. If you have any questions please consult the relevant embassy or high commission. Please check the visa information regularly, as changes often happen without warning.

Insurance

You'll need to buy appropriate travel insurance covering your participation on the project. You won't be able to go without the right travel insurance so double check to avoid disappointment. Please make sure that you're covered for the whole duration of your trip – from the day you leave the UK to the day you return. It's also best to get your travel insurance at the same time as paying the deposit for your project. Depending on your policy, this will cover you for any unexpected cancellations.

Your insurance should include the following:

  • Medical cover, including medical emergencies and medical evacuations (up to USD$3,000,000 / GBP£2,000,000);
  • Personal liability (up to USD$1,500,000 / GBP£1,000,000);
  • Cancellation and curtailment of your trip (up to the value of your project contribution).

If you are going to be scuba diving you should get coverage for scuba diving up to 30m, including hyperbaric therapy treatment (unlimited). You should consider obtaining insurance to cover you for any additional activities which you plan to do during, before, or after your Frontier project. We recommend that you obtain cover for your baggage and personal effects.
