2. The project

WHAT DOES THE PROJECT DO?

The Senegalese are well known for their sporting ability and sport is a universal language that brings people together. If you would like to work on your own capabilities and to share them with others why not join the Frontier-Senegal sports coaching programme?

This is a great opportunity for talented kids to start on the path of a rewarding career, but volunteers are desperately needed to help with training. Schools in very deprived areas of Senegal need help and support, as they are under resourced and under funded and by dedicating your time and effort to helping these marginalised children you will have a hugely positive impact on their lives.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING?

During your first two days we will give you a local orientation of the area, showing you how to find internet cafes, cash machines and the local transport before starting your placement.

Your role will be to train children aged 10  to 16 at a football centre. You may also have the opportunity to work with the coaches of local teams participating in the regional and national championships, depending on the time of your visit, as a result of which you will become the link between the children and the coaches. You will be in charge of the project and will be required to use your initiative to organise your own timetable with the children five days a week, mornings and afternoons. As well as football, it is also possible to coach them in other sports, including basketball, roller skating, athletics and volleyball.

You will be so much more than a teacher to them, as you act as their mentor and friend leading them on a training schedule which is designed to be enjoyable and educational. Whilst working on this project you are encouraged to be creative and bring your own unique skills and personality to enliven and enrich the experience of the kids in your care.

Volunteers staying for three weeks or longer will also have the opportunity to continue their projects in the rural community of Kolda in Southern Senegal.

3. What to expect

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ARRIVE?

You will be met upon arrival at Dakar Leopold Sedar Senghor International Airport on the Monday by our friendly coordinator and taken to your accommodation.

WHERE WILL I BE STAYING?

Depending upon the time of your arrival, you will either be taken to a local hotel (if you arrive late at night) or directly to your welcoming homestay family in Dakar. You will be given your own room that may be shared with one other volunteer, and will be based in a homestay within walking distance of your work placement. The accommodation will of course be clean and comfortable with all the basic amenities and your host family will be more than happy to help you with your French and Wolof and provide you with any local information which you may need to help you settle in.

WHAT WILL I BE EATING?

During your stay you will enjoy three meals a day, which you will normally share with your host family. Dishes that you may encounter include avocado stuffed with prawn, barbecued chicken in a rich onion and lemon sauce and, if you are vegetarian, look out for the popular chopped egg salad amongst other tasty treats. Those with a sweet tooth may like to try peanut ice cream! Generally the emphasis will be on simple home cooked dishes made with fresh local produce.

In Senegal the traditional way to eat is from a huge bowl placed in the centre of the floor. The whole family sits and eats together using only the right hand. This is an integral part of Senegalese culture, however if you prefer, your host family will happily provide you with your own plate.

ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

The city of Dakar is one of Africa's most vibrant, with a thriving music scene and buzzing street markets contrasting with beautiful, peaceful beaches, museums and galleries. There are many cultural workshops which you can attend and which you can book through local providers, further supporting the local economy. These include such varied activities as African drumming (djembe), African textile dying and traditional Senegalese cooking. Joining in activities with local people is a must and other activities such as football, volleyball and dancing are very popular.

There is plenty to explore around Senegal. The Casamance, for example, has sandy beaches, lush vegetation and a very welcoming population and St Louis in the North is an old colonial city where traces of the French colonial times can still be found.

Visas

Depending on your destination country and your country of origin, you might require a visa. Please see the appropriate country consular website for details or contact our affiliate visa consultancy service. Please note that your visa will usually start on the date that you enter the destination country regardless of when it was issued. Please check with the relevant embassy or high commission. If you are purchasing your visa or paying entry/exit fees in-country you will probably need to pay in US Dollars. If you have any questions please consult the relevant embassy or high commission. Please check the visa information regularly, as changes often happen without warning.

Insurance

You'll need to buy appropriate travel insurance covering your participation on the project. You won't be able to go without the right travel insurance so double check to avoid disappointment. Please make sure that you're covered for the whole duration of your trip – from the day you leave the UK to the day you return. It's also best to get your travel insurance at the same time as paying the deposit for your project. Depending on your policy, this will cover you for any unexpected cancellations.

Your insurance should include the following:

  • Medical cover, including medical emergencies and medical evacuations (up to USD$3,000,000 / GBP£2,000,000);
  • Personal liability (up to USD$1,500,000 / GBP£1,000,000);
  • Cancellation and curtailment of your trip (up to the value of your project contribution).

If you are going to be scuba diving you should get coverage for scuba diving up to 30m, including hyperbaric therapy treatment (unlimited). You should consider obtaining insurance to cover you for any additional activities which you plan to do during, before, or after your Frontier project. We recommend that you obtain cover for your baggage and personal effects.
