QUALIFICATIONS

A variety of qualifications are available on many of our projects. For example, BTEC certificates and diplomas on our Group conservation projects and TEFL certificates and BTECs on most of our teaching projects. You may also be able to gain a CoPE to support your university application. For more information on these qualifications, please see the qualifications section of our website or ask your volunteer advisor.

WHAT DOES THE PROJECT DO?

This intensive six week traineeship is perfect for both beginners and anyone with a bit of previous windsurfing experience who is looking to improve their skills and to teach this exciting water sport to others. This course has been specially designed to allow you the maximum time to develop your own personal windsurfing skills, as well as learning the correct techniques on how to instruct others. You will also gain an internationally recognised instructorship qualification, which means you can teach windsurfing almost anywhere in the world!

You will be taught alongside beginners so you can be sure of picking up top tips from the professionals on teaching technique. You’ll also attend theory classes where you’ll learn about good teaching practice and the safety issues which every instructor will need to know.

This is a whole lot more than just a windsurfing experience; it is an opportunity to expand your own skill set in a sport which you will undoubtedly develop a passion for, as well as being able to train others throughout the world.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING?

Your first four weeks will provide you with intensive foundation training, including personal performance coaching and essential courses in first aid and rescue boat driving. You will be in the water practising your windsurfing everyday under the guidance of expert coaches, and will likely be amazed at your progress in this short time.

Your final two weeks will be devoted to instructor training and assessment, focusing on the coaching techniques you will need to inspire other beginners. You will develop an imaginative approach to teaching safe and efficient windsurfing, as well as the underlying theory. You will have enough time to learn and practice all the necessary skills before you demonstrate your capability in the final examination, when you will then be awarded with your RYA qualification.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ARRIVE?

The sailing centre is located in the Middle Harbour, Sydney and you will need to make your own way to the accommodation in Manly from Sydney airport, by train and ferry. We will provide you with easy to follow instructions prior to your departure to enable you to plan your journey. You will be met by a friendly Frontier representative on arrival and have plenty of time to rest and get to know your housemates.

WHERE WILL I BE STAYING?

You will be responsible for booking your own accommodation for the duration of your training programme, and the Manly Beach area offers a wide range of hostels and hotels close to the sea front. The surf school you will be attending has its own affiliated self-catering student accommodation, which is available for an additional fee.

If you opt to upgrade to the surf school accommodation you will receive daily transport to the training centre. The house has twin-bedded rooms and simple, shared kitchens with all the basic facilities you’ll need to cook up a feast. There are also laundry facilities for you to use when needed.

WHAT WILL I BE EATING?

Food is not provided as part of this programme and so it will be your responsibility to source your own meals. Catering for yourself is a really fun element of travelling away from home; it provides a great opportunity to bond with your fellow travellers and allows you to explore the local cuisine in local restaurants and street food stalls.

Insurance

You'll need to buy appropriate travel insurance covering your participation on the project. You won't be able to go without the right travel insurance so double check to avoid disappointment. Please make sure that you're covered for the whole duration of your trip – from the day you leave the UK to the day you return. It's also best to get your travel insurance at the same time as paying the deposit for your project. Depending on your policy, this will cover you for any unexpected cancellations.

Your insurance should include the following:

  • Medical cover, including medical emergencies and medical evacuations (up to USD$3,000,000 / GBP£2,000,000);
  • Personal liability (up to USD$1,500,000 / GBP£1,000,000);
  • Cancellation and curtailment of your trip (up to the value of your project contribution).

If you are going to be scuba diving you should get coverage for scuba diving up to 30m, including hyperbaric therapy treatment (unlimited). You should consider obtaining insurance to cover you for any additional activities which you plan to do during, before, or after your Frontier project. We recommend that you obtain cover for your baggage and personal effects.
