WHAT DOES THE PROJECT DO?

Education in Sri Lanka is relatively wide-reaching and the majority of children are able to access free primary and secondary school education. Despite this promising progress, the quality of this education is often unsatisfactory, further exacerbating the already limited opportunities available to those within lower socioeconomic communities. You will become part of a dedicated team, committed to providing quality education to those children living in impoverished areas around the city of Kandy. Help provide crucial support to aid the academic and personal development of these cheerful children to increase their future potential.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING?

Introduction Week

Your first week is designed to give you an opportunity to explore the history and culture of Sri Lanka, and of course Kandy, with visits to local sites of special interest such as nearby markets, sample the local cuisine, familiarise yourself with Sri Lankan customs and meet the local people, as well as hopefully learning some key phrases to help you get by.  Following this wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself fully in your new surroundings, your briefings for the volunteer work will begin along with language classes and cooking lessons throughout the week.

Volunteer Work

During your placement you will have the opportunity to get involved in a variety of different activities, dependent on the needs of the class at the time of your visit. Your primary role will be to contribute towards English classes and support the local teaching staff, working with the enthusiastic and animated pupils. Undoubtedly you will find this experience incredibly rewarding as you see the impact of your coaching on your pupil’s English skills and get to know them on a more personal level. You may even have the opportunity to lead some classes or be asked to help out with drama activities, music lessons and potentially other foreign languages depending on your own skill set. Other teachers and staff may require your help in planning lessons. This is a fantastic chance to show off your creative side and teach the children fun new games and activities. The charismatic children you work with will be grateful for all your hard work as you help them to progress towards a more positive future.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ARRIVE?

Upon arrival at Colombo Airport you will be greeted by a representative of Frontier-Sri Lanka and transferred to your accommodation in Kandy, where you will be based for the duration of your stay. Once acclimatised and settled into the Sri Lankan way of life, you will then begin your introduction week followed by your volunteer work.

WHERE WILL I BE STAYING?

Your accommodation throughout your placement, both during the introduction week and the work placement itself, will be will be basic, dorm style rooms (single gender) with bathroom and toilet facilities. You will be able to learn about the Sri Lankan culture, improve your language skills and experience the Sri Lankan way of life.

Your accommodation will be clean, secure and comfortable, and you will be sharing a room with fellow volunteers and will have access to basic facilities.

WHAT WILL I BE EATING?

You will be provided with three meals a day which will be typical of Sri Lanka's cuisine, mainly consisting of boiled or steamed rice served with curry.  Curries in Sri Lanka are typically made with meat, fish, vegetable and even fruit, and are made using coconut milk.  A typical meal consists of a ‘main curry’, as well as several other curries made with vegetable and lentils and served with side dishes such as pickles and chutneys.

ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

During your free time why not explore some of the wonders that this incredible country has to offer? From ancient cities such as Anuradhapura, to tranquil beaches, or the Hill Country, where misty mornings adorn the idyllic landscape of pristine waterfalls and rolling tea plantations, Sri Lanka plays host to a huge variety of flora and fauna, including wild leopards. A range of National Parks and safari tours are available to choose from, not to mention a visit to watch the sun rise at The Worlds End!

Visas

For fast, efficient and up-to-date visa advice please contact our recommended visa consultancy partner:

Depending on your destination country and your country of origin, you might require a visa. Please see the appropriate country consular website for details or contact our affiliate visa consultancy service. Please note that your visa will usually start on the date that you enter the destination country regardless of when it was issued. Please check with the relevant embassy or high commission. If you are purchasing your visa or paying entry/exit fees in-country you will probably need to pay in US Dollars. If you have any questions please consult the relevant embassy or high commission. Please check the visa information regularly, as changes often happen without warning.

Insurance

You'll need to buy appropriate travel insurance covering your participation on the project. You won't be able to go without the right travel insurance so double check to avoid disappointment. Please make sure that you're covered for the whole duration of your trip – from the day you leave the UK to the day you return. It's also best to get your travel insurance at the same time as paying the deposit for your project. Depending on your policy, this will cover you for any unexpected cancellations.

Your insurance should include the following:

  • Medical cover, including medical emergencies and medical evacuations (up to USD$3,000,000 / GBP£2,000,000);
  • Personal liability (up to USD$1,500,000 / GBP£1,000,000);
  • Cancellation and curtailment of your trip (up to the value of your project contribution).

If you are going to be scuba diving you should get coverage for scuba diving up to 30m, including hyperbaric therapy treatment (unlimited). You should consider obtaining insurance to cover you for any additional activities which you plan to do during, before, or after your Frontier project. We recommend that you obtain cover for your baggage and personal effects.
