WHAT DOES THE PROJECT DO?

By participating on the Frontier-Thailand Medical Programme you will be contributing towards this amazing initiative which has been set up to provide support to this under-resourced rural outpost, and facilitate knowledge exchange and capacity building for both local and international health workers.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING?

Your second day in Bangkok will be spent exploring the sights and the sounds of this famous city before transferring the following day to the project site in Surin through Thailand’s largest national park, Khao Yai. Once at the site you will be given a full orientation and health and safety briefing as you settle in to your new home. The following day you will be introduced to your placement.

This project is best suited to medical students and medical practitioners as the work will involve carrying out medical duties within a hospital or local medical clinic. Your internship will give you invaluable preparation for a career in medicine. The placement will allow you to observe medical practices and give you the opportunity to take part in the day-to-day running of a hospital or clinic. Those with determination, enthusiasm, aptitude and the right inclination may be able to assist the doctors and nurses in their duties and gain hands-on experience of administering healthcare to the Thai people.

The project is led by full-time professional Thai health workers who will sit down with you upon arrival to coordinate your work programme. Your work may consist of basic healthcare activities such as making beds, observing procedures, shadowing medical staff, taking histories, administering prescriptions and diagnosis of ailments as well as providing general assistance to the local medical staff. However, please note that your level of involvement will depend completely upon your own previous experience and qualifications as well as the needs of the hospital/clinic at the time of your visit. It is therefore important to remain flexible.

Longer term volunteers may also have the opportunity to participate in some of our outreach work to local rural communities which has been set up to provide vital access to healthcare services for vulnerable individuals.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ARRIVE?

Upon arrival at Bangkok International Airport (BKK) on the Friday you will be met by a friendly Frontier representative and transferred straight to your guesthouse on the bustling Khao San road, famous for being the backpackers Mecca. Once you are checked in you can take some time to adjust and freshen up and then meet up with the rest of the group in the evening. The next day you will explore some of the city’s landmarks such as temples, street food stands and palaces.

WHERE WILL I BE STAYING?

For your first two days you will be staying in shared guest house accommodation in Bangkok.

Once you have transferred to Surin you will be accommodated at our volunteer house in shared dormitory style accommodation for the remainder of your placement. You will find all of your accommodation to be basic, but of course clean and comfortable with all the basic amenities.

WHAT WILL I BE EATING?

You will be responsible for sourcing your own food throughout your volunteering period. Thai is one of the world's most exciting cuisines, and if you're willing to experiment, you'll be richly rewarded. Contrary to popular belief, not all Thai food is fiery hot and there are plenty of tasty dishes suited to the Western palate. This hybrid cuisine has been influenced by soups and noodle dishes from China, curries from India and satays from Indonesia. Most dishes incorporate four elements, sweet, sour, salty and hot flavours, and many of the dishes are rice or noodle based. Different provinces may also have different culinary specialities so this may be a chance for you to explore what Surin has to offer!
It was definitely a very worthwhile experience!  | 18 Jun 2014

Flights

Flights are not included in our trip costs. However, we have partnered with an experienced and professional team of travel experts to help our volunteers find the best flight deals for their trips with us. This travel specialist operates in the tailor-made, long haul multi-stop travel market, arranging complex airfares and transfers for independent travellers. They provide expertise, security and a vast product range along with a Travel Butler service which is a single point of contact and support whilst you are overseas.

We recommend that you obtain a quote using the following contact details rather than book online, as our partner will offer you the most competitive fares. To receive your quote or to seek any advice for your flights, please contact our dedicated team of travel experts on 0800 082 9994 (or +44 800 082 9994 outside the UK) or email frontier@flightcentre.co.uk .

Visas

For fast, efficient and up-to-date visa advice please contact our recommended visa consultancy partner:

Depending on your destination country and your country of origin, you might require a visa. Please see the appropriate country consular website for details or contact our affiliate visa consultancy service. Please note that your visa will usually start on the date that you enter the destination country regardless of when it was issued. Please check with the relevant embassy or high commission. If you are purchasing your visa or paying entry/exit fees in-country you will probably need to pay in US Dollars. If you have any questions please consult the relevant embassy or high commission. Please check the visa information regularly, as changes often happen without warning.

Insurance

You'll need to buy appropriate travel insurance covering your participation on the project. You won't be able to go without the right travel insurance so double check to avoid disappointment. Please make sure that you're covered for the whole duration of your trip – from the day you leave the UK to the day you return. It's also best to get your travel insurance at the same time as paying the deposit for your project. Depending on your policy, this will cover you for any unexpected cancellations.

Your insurance should include the following:

  • Medical cover, including medical emergencies and medical evacuations (up to USD$3,000,000 / GBP£2,000,000);
  • Personal liability (up to USD$1,500,000 / GBP£1,000,000);
  • Cancellation and curtailment of your trip (up to the value of your project contribution).

If you are going to be scuba diving you should get coverage for scuba diving up to 30m, including hyperbaric therapy treatment (unlimited). You should consider obtaining insurance to cover you for any additional activities which you plan to do during, before, or after your Frontier project. We recommend that you obtain cover for your baggage and personal effects.
