Vietnam University Teaching

Vietnam University Teaching

A project that aims at empowering university students in Phan Thiet, Vietnam, by teaching English and thus increasing their employability opportunities.

Prices from $895

After emerging from years of conflict and war, Vietnam has now become a permanent fixture on many a wanderer's bucket list and attracts millions of visitors annually. It is a diverse country, both geographically and demographically. From the chilly and lush jungle-clad mountain peaks of the north and the unique, traditional tribes that occupy them, to the vast marshes and waterways of the mighty Mekong delta in the south, there is much to experience throughout Vietnam.

Traditionally the economy in Vietnam has been rooted in agriculture and rice production, and though this is still a very important part of the economy, Vietnam has transformed itself into one of the fastest growing and most diverse economies in Southeast Asia with the expansion of manufacturing and tourism.

This project will present you with the unique opportunity to teach English to local students who attend university in sunny Phan Thiet. With your help the students will develop their English language skills and therefore improve their employability opportunities in the growing Vietnamese economy. Using fun teaching methods you will help the students improve their vocabulary, sentence structures and pronunciation. This project will also allow you to improve your own teaching skills and learn about the unique Vietnamese culture.

WHAT DOES THE PROJECT DO?

During the project you will be teaching English to local University students aged between 18 and 24. Most of the students are likely to be at a beginner level, but will be eager to improve their knowledge of the English language to increase their employability.
Your main role will be to improve their speaking ability, attending the student’s usual English classes as a guest lecturer.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING

You will be working at the centre Monday to Friday; your work schedule will cover a comprehensive, varied and enjoyable teaching programme which will engage you fully with your students. Methods of teaching will include having one-on-one conversations with students or using the whiteboards to demonstrate grammar and vocabulary material. Since your main role is to improve the student speaking ability there will be little preparation work to do outside of the classroom. Each day you will be involved in 4 lessons, two in the morning and two in the afternoon, with plenty of free time after lunch and in the evening for you to explore local markets or go to the beach.

You will be guided by a local professor at the University, which will encourage you to formulate ideas and develop your teaching skills and techniques. As you practice dialogue with your students, you will learn more about their culture and respond by telling them about yours. Overall, you are sure to gain huge satisfaction from inspiring these students, whilst significantly enhancing your own skills and experience.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ARRIVE

A member of staff from our local partner organisation in Vietnam will meet you on arrival at Tan Son Nhat International Airport and take you to your accommodation.

You will need to arrive on the Sunday to allow you time to relax and settle in before your project starts on the Monday.

WHERE WILL I BE STAYING

Your accommodation will be located on the campus of Phan Thiet University, where you will be staying in single sex dormitories for up to 6 people. The rooms are equipped with bathrooms, air-conditioning and hot water to ensure you are comfortable during your stay.

WHAT WILL I BE EATING

You will be provided with three meals a day during the week and two meals a day at weekends, all of which will be provided at your accommodation. The food will be cooked by locals, which will give you the chance to taste traditional Vietnamese dishes cooked using delicious local ingredients.

Traditional Vietnamese cooking is known for its fresh ingredients, minimal use of oil, plentiful use of herbs and vegetables. Typical meals may include rice vermicelli noodles, jasmine rice, dried shrimp and bean sprouts. However, meals may include some Western dishes such as sandwiches, spaghetti and bread. Did we mention rice?

Insurance

You'll need to buy appropriate travel insurance covering your participation on the project. You won't be able to go without the right travel insurance so double check to avoid disappointment. Please make sure that you're covered for the whole duration of your trip – from the day you leave the UK to the day you return. It's also best to get your travel insurance at the same time as paying the deposit for your project. Depending on your policy, this will cover you for any unexpected cancellations.

Your insurance should include the following:

  • Medical cover, including medical emergencies and medical evacuations (up to USD$3,000,000 / GBP£2,000,000);
  • Personal liability (up to USD$1,500,000 / GBP£1,000,000);
  • Cancellation and curtailment of your trip (up to the value of your project contribution).

If you are going to be scuba diving you should get coverage for scuba diving up to 30m, including hyperbaric therapy treatment (unlimited). You should consider obtaining insurance to cover you for any additional activities which you plan to do during, before, or after your Frontier project. We recommend that you obtain cover for your baggage and personal effects.
