Portugal Food Waste Project

Portugal Food Waste Project

This project wants to merge tourism and volunteering in a unique experience.

Prices from $695

One of Europe’s oldest nations, Portugal is a spectacular country featuring hill top forts, dramatic walled towns and pristine beaches. The diversity and friendliness of the people, alongside the rustic flavours of traditional dishes and the delicious and affordable wine, make Portugal a must see destination.
Whilst visiting this incredible country why not contribute to a genuinely important cause, whilst educating yourself and others.
It is estimated that between one third and one half of all the food produced globally is wasted.  Amongst all the actions that have been adopted, the most popular and efficient one seems to be raising awareness within the community, encouraging behavioural change to reduce food waste.
By joining this rewarding project, you will contribute in delivering food and helping over 3000 people every day. It is a great opportunity to address an issue that is not only restricted to Portugal but is increasingly being discussed and tackled globally. Through this meaningful work you will have the opportunity to be integrated into a team of volunteers from all over the world tackling food waste.

WHAT DOES THE PROJECT DO?
This project wants to merge tourism and volunteering in a unique experience. The idea is to raise awareness on food wastage together with responsible tourism. You will have the opportunity to visit Lisbon whilst also contributing to bringing a positive change in the community. You will meet other volunteers who share your passion for changing lives. Whilst working in the local community you will also gain experience in leading a team and learning on how to re-use food that would otherwise to waste.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING?
In this program, you will actively contribute to fight food waste and hunger in a program that feeds over 3000 people a day.  Volunteers will support a network of centres which recover food from local restaurants, supermarkets and cafés and re-distribute it among families, elderly and homeless people in need.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ARRIVE?
You will be picked up at Lisbon International Airport by a member of our in-country staff. You will then be transported to your accommodation where you will be given an introduction to the program and the city.

WHERE WILL I BE STAYING?
Whilst volunteering on this project you will be staying in a shared volunteer apartment in the city centre with all the amenities you need including TV, Wi-Fi, towels, a fully equipped kitchen, different comfortable common areas and a terrace to relax on. You will be lodged in a dormitory at a sustainable Hostel with the option to upgrade for an extra cost. The dormitories are single-gendered and have safe boxes for you to store your belongings safely.

WHAT WILL I BE EATING?
You will be provided three typical Portuguese dishes daily, but there will be also alternatives for vegans, vegetarians, lactose intolerant and gluten free meals. Free tea and water is also available at the hostel at any time. You will have the chance also to try the classic Mediterranean influenced Portuguese dishes ad carne de porco à Alentajana (pork marinated in wine with clams), gaspacho (cold soup made of tomatoes, onions, garlic and chillies), and a lot of fresh fish: as the famous bacalhau or salted cod of which every region has its own specialty.

They provide expertise, security and a vast product range along with a Travel Butler service which is a single point of contact and support whilst you are overseas.

We recommend that you obtain a quote using the following contact details rather than book online, as our partner will offer you the most competitive fares. To receive your quote or to seek any advice for your flights, please contact our dedicated team of travel experts on 0800 082 9994 (or +44 800 082 9994 outside the UK) or email frontier@flightcentre.co.uk .

Visas

For fast, efficient and up-to-date visa advice please contact our recommended visa consultancy partner:

Depending on your destination country and your country of origin, you might require a visa. Please see the appropriate country consular website for details or contact our affiliate visa consultancy service. Please note that your visa will usually start on the date that you enter the destination country regardless of when it was issued. Please check with the relevant embassy or high commission. If you are purchasing your visa or paying entry/exit fees in-country you will probably need to pay in US Dollars. If you have any questions please consult the relevant embassy or high commission. Please check the visa information regularly, as changes often happen without warning.

Insurance

You'll need to buy appropriate travel insurance covering your participation on the project. You won't be able to go without the right travel insurance so double check to avoid disappointment. Please make sure that you're covered for the whole duration of your trip – from the day you leave the UK to the day you return. It's also best to get your travel insurance at the same time as paying the deposit for your project. Depending on your policy, this will cover you for any unexpected cancellations.

Your insurance should include the following:

  • Medical cover, including medical emergencies and medical evacuations (up to USD$3,000,000 / GBP£2,000,000);
  • Personal liability (up to USD$1,500,000 / GBP£1,000,000);
  • Cancellation and curtailment of your trip (up to the value of your project contribution).

If you are going to be scuba diving you should get coverage for scuba diving up to 30m, including hyperbaric therapy treatment (unlimited). You should consider obtaining insurance to cover you for any additional activities which you plan to do during, before, or after your Frontier project. We recommend that you obtain cover for your baggage and personal effects.
